Have you ever wondered about the stories that "lye" within hotel rooms? If the walls could talk. I'm sure every hotel room has a story, especially 'California Suite', a quaint little play filled with entertainment and laughter!
In the comical play, 'California Suite' directed by Herman and Greg Kemper gives the audience a dose of what can really happen in a single hotel room.
In a typical Neil Simon fashion, lots of witty repartee and neurosis peppered the performance with a strong showing from nearly all the actors.
'California Suite' is a story of the mishaps of four couples at the world famous, Beverly Hills Hotel. There's Marvin (Fortunato Frattasio), a married man desperately trying to hide his call girl from his wife Millie (Laura Buckles). Two couples, Beth (Odessa Crouse) and Mort (Jack Archey), and Stu (Dave Bushnell) and Gert (Laura Buckles) whom are best friends on vacation at each other's neck. A divorced couple, Bill (Ken Bernfield) and Hannah Warren (Lynne Conner-Smith) attempts to determine their daughter's future. Lastly, there is the British actress Diana (Debbie Hall) and her closeted husband, Sidney (Darrel Philip). This unlikely crew makes for ironic mishaps and no small bit of slapstick, to be sure.
'California Suite' isn't the most unpredictable of plays, but with what they had to work with, the crew did a mighty fine job. Laura Buckles gave a performance akin to 'Friends' Jennifer Aniston as Millie, but the real stand-out was Debi Hall's performance as Diana. Hall seemed to bring a raw talent to the stage that could make one double-over laughing and become sentimental all at the same time.
Although it was a very entertaining play, it seemed to be a bit over dramatic in some instances.
Simon seems to be making one overriding point and that is this: we all need to have integrity and be honest about our feelings with the people in our lives otherwise it will turn into a laughable chaos as portrayed in this play.
If laughs are what you're after, Suite delivers and in spades. What's more, anyone who has lived a day over eighteen will see themselves somewhere in the Beverly Hills Hotel within the space of two and a half hours.
Lighthearted, familiar and not-too-full of surprises, California Suite has something for everyone.
