Mamma Mia at The Pantages Theatre Review – FANTASTIC for Two Weeks Only, April 7 - 19

MAMMA MIA! has its origins in London where it began running in March of 1999.   It now has more productions playing internationally than any other musical.  No doubt, it is because it is such a fun, lighthearted musical.   Audience members are known to sing and dance in the aisles, and there was enthusiastic hand clapping during the performance and a very long standing ovation on opening night. This one play you can see time and time again and we loved it! I took my girlfriend who, because she “does not like ABBA songs” did not want to go. I finally convinced her and she loved it!

Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, returns to the Pantages Theatre for two weeks only, playing through April 19, 2009. This engagement marks the first return to the Pantages in five years as well as the first Los Angeles engagement since the story's motion picture version reaffirmed the public's love affair with MAMMA MIA!. The film is the highest grossing musical film worldwide and internationally.  Tickets are available and range from $25-$78.

Los Angeles audiences are once again treated to what is arguably the World's #1 Show - MAMMA MIA! -- with ten productions of running concurrently around the planet 6 permanent productions and 2 tours. With the stage version having grossed over $2 billion dollars, and the 2008 film version is the highest grossing musical film worldwide and internationally. MAMMA MIA! is acclaimed by the Associated Press as "quite simply, a phenomenon." Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA's timeless songs, writer

Writer Catherine Johnson has made a story of ABBA’s timeless hits in a tale set in the easy breezy Greek isles.   Twenty-two ABBA songs are interwoven in the tale.    The producer’s intention when developing the musical was not to create a tribute show, but a truly original book musical.   And MAMMA MIA! has absolutely nothing to do with the band ABBA, although   Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the composers of the original music for ABBA, have been involved in the development of the show from the beginning.

Catherine Johnson's sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Songs including "Dancing Queen"; "The Winner Takes It All"; "Money, Money, Money" and "Take A Chance on Me" are all featured in this feel-good night of fun and laughter.

The producer tasked the author to consider that ABBA’s songs fell into two different generations, the slightly younger, playful songs, and the more “mature”, emotional songs.    This is how the idea of a cross-generational and heart-warming story of a mother and daughter was derived.
