L.A. is going Ape over the Far out, Funky, Broadway touring company of HAIRPSRAY.

HAIRSPRAY is now playing through Sept 5th at the Pantages in Hollywood.

Don't walk, don't run, do the locomotion or the mashed potato, you know dance. Dance your funky self to the Pantages and catch this Wicked show. It's Far out man, I guarantee you'll have a blast.

In HAIRSPRAY it's 1962 - the 50's are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance Program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do?

Angelinos have been eagerly awaiting this 8 time Tony Award winning musical. It was a hit during previews in Seattle and then stormed into New York where it knocked Broadway over. It has been touring the country and finally on Wednesday night opened in L.A.

The excitement was tremendous opening night with lines curling down the block in front of the Pantages. The stars, cameras, paparazzi and fans were all there jazzed and righteous, baby.

The show opened onto a bedroom scene with a bed sitting on it's end at a 90 degree angle and SURPRISE - to me at least maybe everyone else knew but I was in the dark - there in the bed was Marissa Jaret Winokur. Marissa is the actress who not only originated the stage version of Tracy Turnblad but one the best actress 2003 Tony award for the part as well Her performance was captivating, innocent and heartfelt. She was sweet and tender while simultaneously being strong powerful and as was the case with the entire cast overflowing with energy. Seriously it was a work out just to watch this show everyone gave all they had and more. It's amazing they can stand up when the show is over.  The cast was great! I loved the gawky and clumsy performance of Sandra DeNise as Penny. Todd Susman as the goofy Wilbur Turnblad and Kianna Underwood little Inez has a shockingly powerhouse of a voice.

But the biggest surprise of the evening was Bruce Vilanch, an Angelino who is famous for his comedy writing - 15 academy award telecasts, the Emmys, the  Tonys, the Grammys, as well aswriting for most TV shows and performers. You may even recognize him from his appearances on the Hollywood Squares. But, who knew he could act? Who knew he could sing and dance?  Bruce plays the part of Edna Turnblad Tracy's mother and he is hilarious he slips in time current one liners that had the audience laughing and clapping. He has a great singing voice and did a far out, righteous job portraying a loving mother who comes into her own during the show.

The show is a blast don't miss it.
