Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA Reopens "Stage Directions" at Odyssey Theatre

ENSEMBLE STUDIO THEATRE-LA REOPENS "STAGE DIRECTIONS" AT ODYSSEY THEATRE FOR EXTENDED 4-WEEK RUN STARTING MARCH 11.

CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED COMEDYABOUT HOMOPHOBIA IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY TACKLES PROVOCATIVE SUBJECT WITH WIT AND HUMOR.

Ensemble Studio Theatre-The LA Project reopens Stage Directions as a co-production at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble on March 11, 2004, where it continues for a limited four-week run through April 4.  Stage Directions closed a critically-acclaimed six-week run at [Inside] the Ford last Saturday as part of the Hot Properties series.  It is the first production in the four-year old series to transfer to another venue.

In this world premiere comedy, tension erupts between two actors during a rehearsal for a play about African American men on the "down low."  When one of the actors expresses discomfort over a scripted stage kiss with another man, the director and playwright must step in to resolve the situation.  The play deals with serious issues, yet in a witty, entertaining, and often hilarious way.

Stage Directions was named "Critics' Choice" in the Los Angeles Times ("Addresses the heart of stereotyping with real wit and resolute craft…an acerbic study of African American homophobia [with] an inspired, upbeat ending, taut direction and a terrific cast"); "Pick of the Week" in the LA Weekly ("The ensemble is awash in charisma under Dan Bonnell's pinpoint staging"); and "Critics' Pick" in Back Stage West ("Raises intriguing questions about how our life informs our art and vice versa").  Daily Variety calls Stage Directions "Highly entertaining...Wilson's finely crafted work impressively addresses such issues as racial and social stereotypes, artistic hypocrisy and the need to find acceptance."

Stage Directions stars William Christian; Marc Ewing; Kareem Ferguson; Chuma Hunter Gault; and the playwright, L. Trey Wilson.  It is presented by Ensemble Studio Theatre-The LA Project, Michael C. Mahon and Laura Jane Salvato producing artistic directors; produced by Rebecca Kirkland; set design is by John H. Binkley; lighting design is by Jeremy Pivnick; sound design is by Jacob M. Davis; and original music by Chyll.

Stage Directions opens at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, on March 11.  Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm through April 4.  Tickets are $20.50 on Thursdays; $22.50 on Fridays and Sundays; and $25.00 on Saturdays.  Call for student, senior, and group discounts.  The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located at 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd. in West Los Angeles.  For reservations and information, the public should call (310) 477-2055.
