Corteo by Circque Du Soleil Premieres in Los Angeles at the Forum - Whoa, did you see that?!

Cirque Du Soleil's Corteo

I sat frozen in awe as I witnessed a mystical world of fun, fearless fortitude under the contemporary big top.  On Thursday, August 23, 2007, as Cirque du Soleil celebrates 20 years of breathtaking performances, it premiered Corteo at the Grand Chapiteau near the Forum in Los Angeles.

The award-winning Cirque du Soleil is French for "Circus of the Sun".  It was founded by two former street performers, Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier in Quebec, Canada.  It is considered a modern-day circus around the globe, each show complete with a central theme and storyline.

Ducking into the Grand Chapiteau and taking a seat surrounding the circular stage, the demands of my grueling day were instantaneously drowned out by a fairytale ambiance.  As my first circus experience in many years since the traditional lion-tamer and tight-rope performance, I was utterly mesmerized by the marvel, mystery, and touch of madness called Cirque du Soleil.  The supernatural physical feats of the performers exuded the sentiment that there is no limit to what a person can do if one dedicates mind, body, and soul to a purpose.  (Although in this case, if you’re 6’ tall and clumsy, it might be best to avoid injuries and enjoy the spectacle before you.)  The performers twisted, turned, and tossed their bodies, gracefully synching movements within split seconds of one another all while maintaining the light-hearted theme and theatrics of the story line.  From start to finish, I either had my jaw dropped in awe or my belly filled with laughter; I was entertained in every facet from the gymnastic, ballet-type choreography, music and costumes to the comedy.

Corteo playfully accounts a clown’s transcendence between heaven and earth, going through the gamut of light-hearted human emotion through death and life in mystical Mad Hatter-type realm as angels constantly hover in abundance.  Besides the pure acrobatic strength and skill of the entertainers, the most awe-inspiring physical feat was the group routine of human bodies spinning around inside giant hula hoop-like structures.  Despite the central character, the Clowness is the real show stealer with her irresistible little voice and comedic timing.

The exclusive after party inside the Forum, sponsored by CGI, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, American Express, Panasonic, and Delta included the cast and crew and a parade of celebrities including icons Florence Henderson, Julie Newmar, Donna Mills, and Michelle Lee, graceful and gorgeous as ever.

Descending down into the Forum revealed yet another magical display from mock fairytale beds to lounge and visit to hors d'oeuvres and cocktails to entertain all the senses.  Beyond being an amazing sampling of tastes, the cuisine was flaunted in classic Cirque du Soleil fashion, donning a human angel as the dessert table centerpiece surrounded by gourmet marshmallow squares, cream puffs, and chocolate spheres.  Bombay Sapphire sponsored a dazzling presentation of acrobatic talents over and around the bar spreading their magical aura with feathers and pixie dust.  Floating around the event, were alien angels and mystical characters bestowing cotton candy and treats.
