LASplash.com: Los Angeles Performances Cirque Berzerk Review - Not Your Average Circus By Jasmine Lee and Photos by Karla Kelley
A mystical dark adventure of Theater, Art, Music, Dance and Acrobatics. Cirque Berzerk's 2009 production of BENEATH is a captivating exploration into the depths of the underworld. Where spectacular wonders of eerie delight manifest themselves upon the stage. Combining both elements of a large scale theater presentation and all around circus, this beautiful and mesmerizing show leaves the audience in wonder at is feet. Dark sensual over tones and erotic jests at death make this a program more seasoned for the adult patron.
Born from the bizarre and highly visual Burning Man in 2005, Cirque Berzerk leaves the world of shock-value shows and delves into a primal and dark place that will make you both laugh and question whether hell would really be so bad. Fueled by visceral live music and singers, each varied act takes you through an emotional smörgåsbord where you are feeding on the performances as the talented cast allows you to vicariously feel what they are performing. The tastefully erotic Skin act will without a doubt stimulate your senses. This is not simply an oddity show although the Circus is very much prevalent in each act. Each set is fully mobile and at times rotating underneath performers who are flying, bouncing, singing, dancing, or being cast into the fiery depths of hell. The clown never truly smiles in this one. If you think this is just another pretty show with acrobats you are solely mistaken. The oddity is finally a show worth seeing.
Cirque Berzerk brings a troupe of 150 members including cast and crew, with talents such as whimsical acrobats, spellbinding aerialists, men on stilts, contortionists, burlesque dancers and magicians. Acts with names like Skin, Death, Lust, Flight and many more can only begin to paint a picture of the mood and journey this presentation can encompass.
It only gets better because the night doesn't end when the last curtain falls. After the show, the Cirque Berzerk experience continues well into the night as the audience is invited to party in The Berzerk Lounge with the entire troupe while Vaud and the Villains perform live music.
Cirque Berzerk takes place at The Los Angeles State Historic Park, 1245 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
