Another triumph for the Cirque. VAREKAI opened to a full house on the 16th and was warmly received by the audience. VAREKAI doesn't disappoint it is filled with the  colorful lush costumes and seemingly impossible physical feats that one has come to associate with the name of Cirque Du Soleil. When you couldn't hear the thunder of applause from the audience you could hear gasps of disbelief followed by more applause. If you missed them in Los Angeles then it is worth the drive out to Orange County to see this amazing show.
Conceived by a new creative team, led by writer and director Dominic Champagne, VAREKAI has played to sold-out audiences, standing ovations and critical acclaim in the first nine cities of its current North American tour. The Philadelphia Inquirer called VAREKAI, "Positively elating. A show so tightly knit that it envelops you fully and you don't want out." New York Newsday exclaimed, "Undeniably spectacular. VAREKAI maintains intoxicating momentum of astonishment and wonder." The Montreal Gazette stated, "VAREKAI is one spectacular tour de force act after another." And Richard Corliss of TIME wrote, "VAREKAI has an otherworldly grace and magnificence that, after two viewings, still astonishes me."

The behind the scenes television documentary series, Cirque du Soleil Fire Within, which followed a group of artists through the creation of VAREKAI, has just been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Nonfiction Program (Alternative). The results will be announced at the Creative Arts Awards on September 13.

The Show
Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary worldæa world where something else is possible. A world called VAREKAI.

The sky lets go a solitary young man, and the story of VAREKAI begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind.

The word VAREKAI (pronounced vereaye'kie) means "wherever" in the Romany language of the gypsiesæthe universal wanderers. Written and directed by Dominic Champagne, this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.

"VAREKAI is a furious, flamboyant celebration inspired by those artists who, every single day, no matter where the wind carries them, risk their life to challenge the laws of gravity, to jump and dance over the volcano," says Writer and Director Dominic Champagne. "To tell the old world that something else is possible."

Cast and Acts
VAREKAI introduces an international cast of more than 50 artists representing
14 countries, including Brazil, Canada, China, Georgia, Italy, Mexico, Moldavia, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

VAREKAI emerges from an explosive fusion of drama and acrobatics. The impossible becomes possible in stunning displays of skill and power set against innovative music and otherworldly sets, interwoven with vivid choreography that speaks to all in the universal language of movement. The pendulum of time sweeps backward, paying tribute to the ancient and rare circus traditions of Icarian games, water meteors and Georgian dance. VAREKAI then catapults to the future with revolutionary twists on such acts as Russian swings, body skating and triple trapeze.

North American Tour
VAREKAI celebrated its World Premiere in April 2002 in Montreal. After its Quebec City and Toronto engagements, VAREKAI began the U.S. portion of the 2002-2005 North American Tour in Philadelphia, followed by engagements in San Francisco, San Jose, Atlanta, New York, Chicago prior to engagements in Los Angeles, Pomona and Orange County.
