-The City of West Hollywood announced its launch of a six month pilot project called The PickUp, a free late night trolley service along Santa Monica Blvd, which aims to steer its riders to local popular venues like West Hollywood hot spot The Abbey, while offering a fun alternative to transportation.
In attendance were The City of West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land, Councilmember John J. Duran and Mayor Pro Tempore John D'Amico. Additionally, WeHo's director of communication Andy Keown, Economic development Analyst Laura Biery, Senior Management Analyst Lisa Belsanti, Chamber Board Member Maxine Tatlonghari and Dara Toulch from Ballantines PR and West Hollywood residents and filmmakers Christy Oldham and Clinton H. Wallace.
The soft opening weekend was held August 9th and 10th. Passengers enjoyed the inaugural ride from Robertson Blvd to Fairfax Blvd and its brillant eye catching graphic design that Symblaze co-founder Josh Morgerman created. Riders were treated to cocktails and tasty hors d’oeuvres at the trendy restaurant Laurel Hardware between stops.
The PickUp Line is a four mile long loop with stops every two to three blocks, offering passengers a lift every fifteen minutes. Brightly colored yellow signs are out on Santa Monica Blvd where riders hop on and off. There are 20 stops along the 4 mile circular route with 10 east bound stop locations and 10 west bound stop locations.
The goal of The PickUp is to provide an alternative to the automobile and bring an energetic and playful transit option to one of West Hollywood’s busiest night time districts. Additionally, the trolley features an onboard ‘photobooth’ called The PickUp Shot, where riders can capture their ride and upload it instantly to social media.
