Welcome to Heretofore Review - Beckett in the Wild West

It’s Westward Ho for the Fringe. Playwright Steve Nevil cleverly taps into Samuel Beckett’s classic play, “Endgame,” with amusing results. This is the Old West of the 1880’s, still lawless but slowly coming under control after the Gold Rush. Mr. Barker (Steve Nevil doing double duty as writer and actor) lives in an abandoned town somewhere west of nowhere. He’s nearly blind and largely confined to a wheelchair. His only contact with the outside world has been his faithful companion Sno (Doug Haverty), who shows up every day to care for him. Life seems to be passing them by as time marches on through their tiny window just under the roof.

Then something finally happens in their quiet and dull lives. Enter a pistol-packing, “take-no-prisoners” cowgirl named Fix (Leslie Caveny). Nothing will ever be the same again.

Author Nevil has taken the Beckett tale and added his own brand for results which will bring a chuckle to your lips. Director Elayne Heilveil helms WELCOME TO HERETOFORE with a real appreciation for Beckett’s subtlety and droll humor – but also with appreciation for how Nevil has navigated these waters in his own idiosyncratic way. They both know how to prepare the audience for the unexpected. The cast is small but professional as they dole out bits of their strange personalities.

WELCOME TO HERETOFORE is a short but effective entry into Hollywood Fringe. The play is over almost before it begins while giving a quick teasing taste which will suit the palate of many theatergoers.
