'The Real Housewives of Toluca Lake; The Musical' a smash hit

It was opening night and the audience was a buzz. Evident were many of Hollywood’s elite including the theatre’s owner Garry Marshall. Early word from the previews pointed to yet another smash hit at Toluca Lake/Burbank’s own Falcon Theatre. But would its latest offering “The Real Housewives of Toluca Lake: The Musical” live up to the buzz? The lights dimmed and the audience hushed. And then the stage came alive with captivating music and five stellar performers – the real housewives of Toluca Lake - and the answer quickly appeared and it was a rock solid YES!

Quickly emerging from the stage was an uproarious parody of the often silly yet much watched television shows purporting to represent “real housewives” of wherever. Only these real housewives were uniquely special because they were hometown girls straight outta Toluca Lake. There was Lulu [Anita Barone], Penny [Jenna Coker-Jones], Beezus [Cynthia Ferrer], Joanne [Meredith Patterson] and Babette [Adrienne Visnic]. Let the mockery and hilarity begin. The vanity was over the top and the infighting got ugly but always wrapped in explosive humor and frequently delivered by exquisite musical presentation.

A remarkable standout performance came from the one male actor on stage Marc Ginsberg who played several characters including in one scene an alternating disinterested bored husband and a passionate lover with two different women at pretty much the same time. In another scene he was a particularly bizarre physical fitness instructor. He was also the foppish hair stylist and the haughty shoe store manager. Clearly and without question March Ginsberg is “The Man.”

The book, music and lyrics are the creation of Molly Bell who says of “The Real Housewives of Toluca Lake: The Musical” that it is “part parody and part homage to Britney Spears.” However she chooses to characterize her work Molly Bell has clearly given the world a magnificent piece of real art.

As always there are a great many people involved in creating and then delivering a five star theatrical performance and in the case of “The Real Housewives of Toluca Lake: The Musical” it is absolutely mission accomplished. One thing for sure, it isn’t about North Hollywood. Okay go and see the show and you will understand.
