The premise behind RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES centers on the integration of Caesar, a primate raised in a controlled family environment. He is tamed, taught and treated as a child. He is a member of the family.  John Franco stars as Will Rodman, a genetic scientist who raises the chimp in his home with his father portrayed by John Lithgow, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.  As the disease progresses the inevitable occurs, Caesar revert to his primate roots and is sent to a facility, which promises to be a sanctuary. It is here that he becomes enraged and regresses to his natural instincts.

As no actual live animals were used in filming, of the anticipated end of summer blockbuster, each sequence that features a primate is entirely computer generated and the special effects wizardry of WETA Digital, the four time OSCAR winning special effects masters behind AVATAR, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and District 9, who created in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES an army of primates terrifyingly credible and astonishing in their realism.

Being one of the selected members of the press to visit the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES set at Mammoth Studios in Vancouver, BC and having had the opportunity to sit on the set during the final stages of filming and witness the transformation of the actor through the use of motion capture sensor suits, into the Chimpanzee, was amazing.

Watching the actors create the troop of primates was incredibly fascinating. The Shrewdness is created from the actors, Andy Serkis, Devyn Dalton, Karin Konoval and Terry Notary, wearing Motion Capture suits by WETA Digital’s CG effects.

Andy Serkis, who is considered the first motion capture star was on set, and like the others wore black scuba diving style suits with LED sensors running from head-to-toe, with a Motion Capture camera helmet, think helmet mounted web cam, only with clarity and no distortion able to capture each and every facial motion and expression through the facial dots.

The actors moved effortlessly across the sound stage, hunched over with crutches that produced  arm extensions creating the visual effect necessary for the WETA Digital’s CG effects to build believable primate appearances.

Those expressions are transferred through the genius of Joe Letteri’s WETA Digital into the expression of the primate civilization. Each of the primates seen in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is a human from the newborn to the adult.
