On May 4, 2012 Punch Television Network (designed to quench African American’s thirst for innovative programming) held its first annual Upfront at House of Blues in Hollywood, California. Celebrities and special guests were greeted by well dressed valet and members of the press who eagerly anticipated their arrivals.
The star studded affair included major names like; Blair Underwood, Robert Townsend, Vivica A. Fox, Miguel Nunez Jr., Obba Babatunde, Fran Drescher, Omar Gooding, Dawn Lewis, Richard Roundtree, Dihann Carroll, Fonzworth Bentley, Billy Dee Williams, Leon, Jay Anthony Brown, Marla Gibbs, Damon Whitaker, Kiki Shepard, James Pickens Jr, Damion Hall, Lady of Rage and Carl Weathers.
As interviews commenced a heightened sense of energy and excitement loomed in the air for the evening ahead. Despite the impressive guest list, the man of the hour was network President and CEO Joseph Collins. After an internship in his youth with WVTV in Milwaukee, Collins flourished his talents and passionately pursued the dream of owning his own network. Punch TV is an urban programming experience which brings together a unique collection of programming reflecting the tastes, preferences, hues, and nationalities of the new urban American – a population that includes Caucasians, African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans and citizenry of mixed ethnicities.
Launched on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, shortly after Columbus Day, Punch Television Network is comprised of 80% original programming. The official Upfront for Punch TV provided celebrities, advertisers and guests an exclusive opportunity to preview 17 shows from a roster of 36 new dramas, comedies, variety shows, talk shows, children’s shows, and inspirational entertainment. Before commencing the show, Joseph Collins delivered a heartfelt speech to a packed house before directing the crowd in an enthusiastic Punch TV chant. Guests sat captivated by the various clips while indulging in chilled cocktails, delicious hors d'oeuvres and Pitbull energy drinks (The official sponsor of Punch TV.)
Each preview was uniquely different and spoke to Collins’ desire to recruit fresh faces and provide thought provoking content for television programming. The event continued into the evening with a celebratory gala allowing guests the opportunity to mingle with their industry peers.
