DOMA theatre never disappoints. The production quality, the acting, costumes and singing all excel in their new production. Opening July 12, 2013 and running through August 18, 2013, they present the hit Tony Award-winning musical, "Nine." The book by Arthur Kopit and the music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, are based on the semi-autobiographical film story (81/2) of the Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. Directed by Marco Gomez, the book was adapted from the Italian by Mario Fratti and the beautiful choreography was done by Rae Toledo.
Having a mid-life crisis, with his marriage on the rocks, Guido Contini (David Michael Trevino) escapes with his reluctant wife, Luisa (Melissa Anjose), his mistress, Carla (Lovlee Carroll) and his muse Claudia (Toni Smith) to a secluded Venetian spa only to realize that his past, in the form of a nine year old boy (Donovan Baise) and his mother (Michelle Holmes) haunts him. He even remembers his time in Catholic school with the nuns as Brittany Rodin, Andrea Arvanigian and Amy Garbett. Emilia Sotelo and Devin Holliman along with Ra'Shawn Durell, Tania Possick, Liza Baron, Victor Mercado and Alex Favela round out the cast of singers and dancers. Dance captain was Amy Garbett.
Contini continues to struggle with the preparations for his new film, he must deal with the three women in his life that compete for his attention and put off his producer who is demanding the script. Contini wanders through the series of flashbacks and dreams as he discovers the solution to his problems by combining art and reality.
As a writer who sometimes faces writer's block while trying to balance everyday life, I easily related to Contini's plight. Director/Executive Producer Marco Gomez, who also did the musical staging, agrees. "For a director, the opportunity to manifest one's ideas onto the screen or stage is endlessly addicting."
