According to legend, a poor mortal goatherd was called upon to settle a dispute among the goddesses about who was the most beautiful of all. Many believe this was the beginning of what is known today as the beauty contest.
Talented and beautiful ladies assembled for The Miss Malibu/Miss Beverly Hills 2015 Beauty Pageant. This annual competition was held at Lowes Hotel, majestically perched at the edge of the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica.
Miss Malibu USA and Miss Beverly Hills USA contestants stood among a bevy of beautiful flowers awaiting the announcement of the winners. The event featured a celebrity Red Carpet, the Crown Diva Fashion Show, WET Swimwear Presentation, Evening Gown Presentation and, Entertainment featuring Alicia Blanco (Miss Arizona USA 2009) and Claudia Douge. Hosted by Tami Farrell and Natasha Martinez, the program flowed quickly, smoothly and with great humor.
Tami Farrell has served as host of the Miss Malibu pageant for eight of its 10 years and brings her own experience to the program. This small town lady from southern Oregon knows first hand the rigorous discipline needed in such a high competitive environment. She began a career in beauty pageants after being diagnosed with a chronic heart condition and realizing she could no longer play sports in school. She had was familiar with the popular beauty pageant contestant Bridgette Wilson who, happened to also come from a small Oregon town. *
Success for Tami came as Miss Oregon Teen 2003, Miss Teen USA 2003 and Miss Malibu USA 2009 and Miss California USA 2009. Now a wife and mother of four-month-old Tucker, she and her family reside in Los Angeles.
The other host Natasha, is a former Laker Girl, Disney Princess and, is a graduate of Chapman University. She holds a BA in Broadcast Journalism. In addition, she was Miss Malibu USA 2014 and placed first runner up at Miss California USA 2014, she is this year’s Ms. Racing Queen. Natasha has interned with Entertainment Tonight and The Insider and is currently interning for ABC 7‘s On The Red Carpet.
The program began with the Crown Diva Fashion show followed by the introduction of the Celebrity Judges. Judges for this year’s Pageant include Elizabeth Rovsek and Gretchen Rossi- from BRAVO’s Real Housewives of Orange County. Elizabeth is a former Miss Kentucky USA, Miss Kentucky Teen USA and now owner and designer of her own swimsuit company, Sun Kitten Swimwear. Gretchen, is ambitious in her own right, ith the Gretchen Christine makeup line and her handbag and accessory collection with the Gretchen Christine makeup line and handbag collection.
Also judging were twins Mark & Matt Harris, the self-proclaimed “Kings of Swag”. They are founding partners in WOW Creations Media which produces some of the largest Celebrity based Gifting Suites and Product Placement agencies in America. London Scott of “Extensions by London” (one of the pageant sponsors) with thirty years in the fashion industry, judges for International Model and Talent Association (IMTA) and Miss Hawaiian Tropic. She is highly sought after by models, actors and their agents to create iconic looks with a flawless set of hair extensions. Peter Young is Creative Director of INTA Gems and Diamonds, the Official Crown Jeweler for the Miss California USA organization. Peter has served as spokesperson for the Love Is Louder movementstarted by The Jed Foundation, MTV and Brittany Snow to support anyone feeling mistreated, misunderstood or alone. Olivia Jordan Miss Beverly Hills 2013 and first runner up in Miss California USA 2013. As Miss World United States 2013, she placed in the top 15 out of 133 countries that competed at Miss World in Bali. An actress and model, Olivia has been featured in Cosmo, Shape and Vogue magazines; currently has 3 commercials, one directed by Penelope Cruz. She has a recurring television role on TNT’s new show “Murder in the First”, as well as two movies. Shelley Fariello, Associate Publisher of OK! Magazine brings more than three decades of experience to her current position. She is one of the most well respected marketing executives in her field and has been innovative in the development and creation of multiplatform sales programs. Terrence Campbell, currently Head of Marketing and Sales for four swimwear brands, has spent the last 22 years as a fashion executive. He is responsible for the financial success of multiple brands and established relationships with major department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave., Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Macy’s, Dillard’s, and many more. Dr. John Vartanian is a nationally recognized double board-certified facial plastic surgeon. Featured in print and broadcast media for his cutting edge work and expertise, he has also been a researcher in several FDA studies and a consultant to the medical aesthetic industry.
Swimwear provided by WET Swimwear opened the competition. Ten Teen models and twenty-seven Miss models presented the attractive and flattering designs. Coming to the stage in groups of five gave the judges time to evaluate each contestant and the young women time for the quick change into the evening gowns for the next segment.
The diverse group of young women came from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures, some following in their mother’s pageant footsteps, others with high expectations, who hope to use the title as a professional stepping stone. Career desires go from fashion blogging to Peace Corp volunteer to Forensic Psychology. These are accomplished young ladies with athletic, volunteerism, entertainment and business and fashion achievements already under their belts. Many of these young women, such as runner-up Sara Bezdrob, will go on to compete in other pageants.
Clearly this was a family affair as the audience loudly voiced their favorites. Friends and family from grandparents, parents, siblings and cousins (even the babies were chiming in) came out to support the young women in their endeavor to gain the titles. In fact, the contestants also claimed there was a warm comradery amongst themselves with some developing great friendships.
After Tami questioned the Teen contestants, ten finalists were announced for the final round of the competition for the titles of Miss Malibu USA 2015 and Miss Beverly Hills USA 2015 based on talent, beauty, fashion and intellectual ideas. The winners compete in finals of the Miss CALIFORNIA 2015 and Miss California Teen 2015 in January.
Miss Malibu USA, Nadia Mejia, is a singer and model that will be starring with her famous father Gerardo Mejia aka Roco Suave and their family in a new reality show for VH1 called “Suave Says”. Miss Malibu Teen USA, Savannah Hudson, recently got back from a world tour with her brother and their band. The pop duo Brandon and Savannah were also finalists on “America’s Got Talent”. Miss Beverly Hills USA, Chanelle Riggan is an Anaheim Ducks Cheer Leader and plans to pursue a career in Forensic Psychology. Miss Beverly Hills Teen USA, Leona Koxha is a former refugee from Kosovo that hopes to on-day work as a United Nations Ambassador to her home country.
Miss Malibu USA and Miss Beverly Hills USA is an annual beauty pageant which promotes a local and national charity. This year, they matched funds donated at the pageant to the Best Buddies California. The winners will be joining Miss California USA Cassandra Kunze and Miss California Teen USA Bianca Vierra for their first appearance at the Best Buddies Poker Tournament in Beverly Hills on August 28th.

Kristen began competing in pageants while at Pepperdine University, going on to work behind the scenes for a number of years before founding Miss Malibu USA. She and her partner, Christian Pelayo opened Crown Diva Boutique and Pageant Academy in 2011, in Santa Monica, CA. Crown Diva Academy is a beauty boot camp which “encourages young women to chase their dreams” and provides expert instruction in interview, runway, modeling, fitness, nutrition and hair/makeup styling. The boutique carries gowns from all the top designers.
