Laughter burns calories, moves oxygenated blood throughout your body, boosts your immune system, and lowers your blood sugar. Ah, then, there’s so much perky liveness and booming good health to be had at the west coast premiere of Hitchcocked at the Asylum Lab.
Until, of course, someone gets murdered.
Hitchcocked is an improv performance set forth in a manner that honors the legendary, round filmmaker of suspense and psychological thrillers. Costumed in 1940s/50s period pieces and set in that time period, Hitchcocked begins with suggestions from the audience: Name a city. Name a place. Name a household item. That’s all the players need to get started on the evening’s journey into hilarity and madness. The questions that inform your evening’s performance may be different and every production during the run will be unique, never to be repeated. Spooky.
While the entire cast is so very good (and clearly having a good time, too), more than a few are shining standouts who seem to have just stepped out of a film Hitchcock might indeed have directed himself. Speaking of directors, Hitchcocked’s director, atrick Bristow, has a deft hand at comedy and knows just when to push and when to pull to keep the tension high, the story flowing and the laughs coming.
A basic rule of improv is to “never say no” in a scene. Same goes for this being your chance at a hilarious evening out of the house.
