Friday night at the Avalon

The famous Avalon nightclub started their fall season Friday Oct. 7th 2011, featuring DJ Fred Falke, Lifelike and a live band from France called Anoraak, bringing an entertaining line up for young hipsters and music lovers to Hollywood.

Although known as the best place for dance music, the Avalon didn’t seem quite recovered from a previous event held just before the big night and wasn’t quite ready as people started pouring in at 10pm for the show.

The holding area called “honey” with only one bar offered $5 Heineken specials but was much too small and more claustrophobic then one would hope. The Dj warmed up the crowd with his down tempo break beats but was rather unimpressive.

At 11pm finally the main room opened and one could watch stage grips and production assistants scramble to set up the main stage. Was the Avalon juggling too many acts in one day?

Soon thereafter Dj Fred Falke started spinning his first set, warming up the crowd with a fusion of French and Deep house.

The German-born, French-based Fred Falke is currently without a doubt one of the most in-demand remixers in dance music. In the game since the late 90s, Falke has done it all. From original collaborations with Alan Braxe in the early 2000s to over 50 career remixes including Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E.', U2's 'Magnificent', and Miike Snow's 'Animal,' Fred Falke has proven time and time again that he is always at the forefront of the French Touch sound.

The first set, however, didn’t really do him justice. The transitions seemed sloppy and 40 minutes into it he abruptly stopped and on came the live band Anoraak, a three-piece band flown in from France. Obviously influenced by tunes from 80is bands like Depeche Mode, the band, although very energetic and upbeat seemed despite their more synthpop+ melodic new wave sounds less original.

The headliners Laurent Ash aka Dj Lifelike, another import from Paris, France brought a more heavy electro/ techno sound to the dance floor and got the crowd letting lose with some good old fashioned feel-good tunes.

Known for his famous French touch hit “Discopolis” which became one of the biggest underground selling anthems in 2005/2006 Lifelike signed on Alex Braxe’s label “Vulture”. After having released “heatwave” last March, he is back today with a single, “Motion” released on the label Computer Science.

After some excellent vocal remixes my senses were oversaturated and although the evening was just beginning, expecting a performance from Social cues that was my cue to exit the club.

Walking down Hollywood blvd. I got thinking about the mid and late 90is, also known as the golden era of French house.

I realized regrettably that there had been but little evolution in sound from French Dj’s since then and that our generation Dj’s lay forever in the shadows of such greats like Daft Punk, Bob Sinclar and DJ Pierre.
