'Dirty Dancing' pure magic

The stage adaptation of ‘Dirty Dancing’ has arrived in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre and is nothing short of pure magic.  The energy is explosive and welcome; the dancing is true beauty in motion and the music is nothing less than sensational guaranteeing that this show will truly be the time of your life.

It is a period piece set in the summer of 1963.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech to the world as pop songs like ‘Duke of Earl,’ ‘Hey! Baby!’ and ‘Love is Strange’ play across the American air waves.  The Houseman family arrives at an upscale resort in the Catskill Mountains for a little vacation.  It doesn’t take long before the youngest daughter Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman happens upon the forbidden staff quarters where she is drawn to pulsating rhythms and sensual dance moves in general and the very sexy Johnny Castle in particular.

Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman was brilliantly portrayed by Gillian Abbott on opening night.  Gillian Abbott will remain in that role until February 7th at which point she passes the baton to Rachel Boone.  In the Oscar award winning 1987 film ‘Dirty Dancing’ Johnny Castle was played by the late great Patrick Swayze. In the current theatrical production at the Pantages it is Christopher Tierney who wows the audience with his spectacular dance moves.  Adrienne Walker and Doug Carpenter each deliver truly awe inspiring vocals to the production.  The Dirty Dancing Orchestra provides a steady and flawless flow of musical accompaniment.

Cast

‘Dirty Dancing’ does have its dark elements including a botched abortion and so is not intended for young audiences.  But in the end ‘Dirty Dancing’ delivers an abundance of happiness and joy so strong and so undeniable that you really will feel that you did indeed enjoy the time of your life.
