Ellen K. and Steve Edwards hosted the soiree

(August 11, 2004: West Hollywood, CA)  The good, the rad and the hungry -- these and other species of Angelenos all came to celebrate at Los Angeles magazine's annual Best of LA soiree.  Taking over the Pacific Design Center's outdoor plaza, hundreds joined hosts Steve Edwards (of Good Day LA) and Ellen K (of ON-AIR WITH RYAN SEACREST) -- along with Leeza Gibbons -- and everything was indeed top notch, as the event name implied.

Spirited greetings were provided by the House of Blues Gospel Choir

First, the House of Blues Gospel Choir greeted guests as they arrived.  Then partiers who packed the plaza sampled fare from many restaurants rated the best in L.A. by the editors of Los Angeles magazine.  This year's winners included Angelini Osteria, Jaan at Raffles L'Ermitage, A.O.C, Ciudad, Joan's on Third, and Lemon Moon.  These were all superb, but this reporter especially enjoyed the always-great Pink's Hot Dog with sauerkraut (sure, the line was long, but not as long as the lines on a typical night at their Melrose-and-LaBrea location!).

Hundreds of hungry guests savored fine cuisine and libations from dozens of LA's best eateries

On the libation side of the equation, I tried (and loved) IZZE Sparkling Fruit Juice (which "combines a full serving of fruit with the hydration of carbonated, natural spring water"), as well as the seemingly-always-seen-at-LA-events Virgin Cola, which comes in multiple varieties like Blonde (Vanilla flavor) and Black (a very respectable, if not perfect, copy of Coke Classic).

Sports galore, and more, at the silent auction

In addition to the fine foods and wines, all were entertained by the Susie Hansen Latin Jazz Band, and those looking for good deals for a good cause placed bids at the silent auction.  Items donated for the evening included magnificent jewelry, fab trips, artwork, spa packages, and collectible sports memorabilia.

Proceeds from the Best of L.A. benefited Leeza's Place and the Alzheimer's Association. Developed in response to the challenges Leeza and her family encountered while seeking support, Leeza's Place is a source of information, strength and purpose -- for both caregivers and the recently diagnosed -- that integrates educational programs, social activities, emotional support, and intergenerational programming; designed to help one navigate through a community's continuum of care, LP ensures access to new, supportive settings, with the goal of educating, empowering and energizing. For more information, see www.leezasplace.org .  The Alzheimer's Association is the world leader in Alzheimer research and support -- a voluntary health organization dedicated to finding preventions, treatments and, eventually, a cure for Alzheimer dementia.   Their website can be found at http://www.alz.org/ .

Sponsors of the evening included Presenting Sponsor Hummer -- plus Associate Sponsors AeroMexico, Asanti Fine Jewelers, Maison d'Optique, Pacific Design Center, Wells Fargo, and Westfield Shoppingtown, Century City.  Speaking of Westfield, their mall makeover is making progress; for ongoing updates, visit http://www.westfield.com/us/centres/california/centurycity/ .
