AFM and AFI are  the hot new Hollywood "it" couple


Good News. There is a new hot Hollywood "It" Couple. In case you haven't already heard the American Film Market and the FI Film Festival have joined forces. In addition to it's traditional winter schedule the American Film Market; AFM will be held twice in 2004. The upcoming slot of Feb 25 - March 3 and then again in the fall Nov 3 - 10 where they will be combining along with AFI Film Festival.

According to AFMA's announcement, each event will continue to be managed separately, but "the collaboration will result in a unified market and festival.".
But enough about the far away future lets talk about now AFM will be running February25 - March 3 in Santa Monica, California.

For the duration of the market, the Santa Monica Loews Hotel gets turned into an office building. They haul out the beds and the rest of the furniture from the rooms, and the different vendors can pick whatever assortment of office furniture they'd like put in their new "offices".  Busy executives along with indie filmmakers wheel and deal making this one of the largest and influential markets in the world.

With more than seven thousand attendees from more than seventy countries, the American Film Market is the world's largest marketplace for film and video international and domestic distribution rights. Three hundred sellers and representatives from (at this particular event) six hundred and forty-two registered buying companies spend eight ten-hour days (and all the dealmaking they can squeeze into the evenings after the official market hours) negotiating the licensing of entertainment products for theatrical, home video, cable, pay-per-view, satellite, and broadcast distribution around the world.

For eight days, the AFM and Santa Monica are the epicenter of the film industry. With over 300 motion picture companies and 7,000 film executives, the AFM assembles the largest gathering of the industry's most influential leaders. Acquisition and development execs, producers, distributors, agents, attorneys, buyers and film financiers convene to pursue the business of film. Hundreds of films are financed, packaged, licensed, and greenlit, sealing over half a billion dollars in business for both completed films and those in preproduction.
