5 Best Hotspots for Geeks in LA - Broaden Your Horizons

The old ones are always the best

There was a time when geeks were shunned, a time when even using the internet was considered to be a nerdy thing. Thankfully, that is no longer the case, but things have taken a rather strange turn. These days geekhood is celebrated at all levels and it’s even considered trendy to be a geek.

True geeks are anything but trendy (as a geek myself, I know that all too well) and we’re now in a situation where the mainstream has clashed with the counterculture. As a result it can be difficult to find places where fellow geeks frequent. Basically, it can be tough to find people of your own kind. But if you live in LA, these geek hotspots should give you all you need.

5. Hobbit House (3819 Dunn Drive, Culver City, CA 90232)

As close as you will get to the real thing in LA

Fans of Lord of the Rings will get a kick out of these apartments made to resemble the famous homes in the fantasy epic. You’ll have to go all of the way to New Zealand to visit the homes used in the film and to see many of the other things you saw in the films. But short of booking a plane ticket halfway around the world, this is the best you will get.

4. Clockwork Couture (707 South Main Street, Burbank, CA 91506)

A steampunk outfit

Steampunk is one of the biggest things in geek culture right now. This mix of industrialism and Edwardian fashion has taken on a life of its own and at Clockwork Couture you can get involved yourself. There are all kinds of clothing, jewelry and more relating to steampunk, perfect for cosplay and for when you want to look a little different and embrace a different side of your personality.

There is also a lot of home decor for anyone who has dreamed of owning their own steampunk home. If that doesn’t do it for you then maybe the replica of the Tardis out front will.

3. El Capitan Theatre (6838 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028)

If you want to settle down and enjoy some classic cinema, including Disney classics, then this is the place to do it. This used to be a popular haunt for me. Not only is it a great place to sit and chill, but you can also bump into likeminded geeks who will chat Disney and other topics with you. Last time I was here I bumped into the owner of a popular humanism site Human Paragon, after which we spent an entire showing of Dumbo talking about transhumanism and the future of AI.

If that’s not the perfect way to spend a geeky evening then I don’t know what is.

2. Creature Shop (1416 N. La Brea Avenue)

The real master of puppets

This is where all of the famous puppets and other creatures created by Jim Henson find a home. This is the genius behind the Muppets, as well as a few other projects. You can find an assortment of props and puppets from his shows and films and you can take a tour of the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge studios on certain days.

1. Playland Arcade (350 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90404)

Did you know that Los Angeles has the fourth highest murder rate in the US? If you focus on the stats  it’s not a safe city and as an adult it can be depressing at times. So, why not take a trip back to your childhood and play some of your favorite arcade games at Playland Arcade.

You will find all kinds of arcade games here, including a number of classic and modern pinball machines. Nothing says “childhood” like a game of pinball if you grew up in the 80s, so take a trip back to those glory days at Playland.
