The Annual Venice Art Walk & Auctions this year will bring the public together with artists, designers, architecture and the community to benefit the Venice Family Clinic which provides free medical, mental health and child development services to poor and uninsured children and adults. Established in 1970 this free clinic, the largest in the country, provides medical care for over 24,400 patients with the help of more than 2,000 volunteers and nearly 500 physicians.
In early 1979 a group of the volunteers at this free clinic on the verge of closure had an idea to help raise funds for the only neighborhood place the working poor could go to see a doctor. At the time there were no art walks in Los Angeles and the first Venice Art Walk was created. By 1983 this annual event has helped the clinic to purchase a permanent home while launching and authenticating careers for big name artists such as Peter Alexander, Carlos Almaraz, Chuck Arnoldi, Larry Bell, Jonathan Borofsky, Laddie John Dill, Sam Francis, Frank Gehry, David Hockney, Ed Moses and Ed Ruscha.
40% of the Clinic's annual operating budget comes entirely from private contributions and philanthropy but the upcoming state budget cuts may provide an ominous scenario for the clinic. Getting hit from all sides particularly with the cuts on the state level, fundraising needs are more important than ever. "The Venice Art Walk & Auctions stands on its own as a world-class art event, but when you consider that it supports health care for the uninsured at Venice Family Clinic, it becomes much more than an art event. It qualifies as community activism" states Elizabeth Benson Forer, Venice Family Clinic's CEO. By providing a highly respected and valued training site for programs in medicine, mental health, nursing, pharmacy, public health and health administration for programs from UCLA, USC, Cedars Sinai, Kaiser and others; The Venice Family Clinic guarantees quality care for it's patients. In turn, the gratitude of these patients and their families provides heartfelt reimbursement to the participating doctors and nurses and trainees.
An opening party on Friday, May 20th will be kicking off this 3-day event with a one-of-a-kind Skate and Surfboard Auction at Track 16 Gallery in the Bergamot Arts Center. Open and free to the public, this will be an evening filled with music, refreshments, and a chance to meet the artists, musicians, athletes, and tattoo legends who have created unique art works from reused, recycled, and recreated skate decks and custom-shaped and “tatted” surfboards. Guests will have the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind creations by more than seventy artists. 100 percent of the proceeds from this silent auction will go to the Clinic.
Three brand new Architecture Tours taking place over the weekend offer privileged access to private residences and gardens designed by some of the city’s most renowned architects and landscape designers. Owners will open their doors to these significant homes to both the self-guided walking tours as well as a bus tour and each includes a ticket to the Venice Art Walk & Auctions on Sunday. The 3 tours offered are:
◆ WEST L.A.—Flats North of Olympic to the Hills North of Sunset. In this docent-led bus tour participants will experience a microcosm of LA lifestyles—from dense urban living to hillside aeries looking out over the city. Included on the tour are the just completed Shoshana/Müller residence, a home for a gallerist and an artist, and a spectacular steel house by architect Barton Myers, which he calls an “elegant warehouse” in the tradition of the postwar Case Study Houses.
Saturday, May 21, 2011 / 11 AM–4 PM
◆ APPLETON WAY—One amazing block and much more. Venice's version of their miracle mile where several spectacular homes have sprouted in just the past five years - four of these homes designed by Brooks + Scarpa, du Architects, Santiago Ortiz, and homeowners Sylvia Aroth & Jeff Cook will be on this self-guided tour, along with gardens designed by Susanne McKevitt and Z Freedman Landscape Design. An added bonus just a few blocks away is the Cor-Ten clad Walnut Residence designed by Modal Design around an 80-year-old umbrella pine.
Saturday, May 21, 2011 / Noon–4 PM
◆ WATER AND TREE-LINED STREETS OF VENICE. Sunday’s self-guided architecture tour features houses within easy walking or bicycling distance of Art Walk artists’ studios, giving tour-goers the opportunity for a day filled with art and architecture. Three of the homes are on Venice’s storied canals, and the others are on streets that were also part of Abbot Kinney’s original “Venice of America”—now some of Venice’s choicest addresses.
Sunday, May 22, 2011 / 11 AM–2 PM
On Sunday, renowned, emerging and established artists will open their private doors to the public for a sneak peak into their lives and stories behind their work during the Art Walk Studio Tours. In addition, more than 400 artists are being showcased in the silent auction taking place at the Westminster School.
The Art Walk Studio Tours and signature Silent Auctions on Sunday are complimented by the free Community Fair on the green at the Westminster School. There you will find the Art Within Reach Pop Up Store where you can own a piece of the future at a price point anyone can afford! This new addition showcases work by fifteen internationally recognized and new artists never before featured in the Art Walk. The artists will create original archival digital ink jet prints in a signed and numbered edition of 20. Artists include Delia Brown, Erin Cosgrove, Todd Gray, Dion Johnson, Mara Lonner, Renee Petropoulos, Fay Ray, Eddie Ruscha, Analia Saban, Samantha Thomas, Mungo Thomson, Kerry Tribe, and Jennifer Wolf.
Also at the school will be Artful Living (a gallery of items for the home), family activities, music, great food, and more. And here’s your chance to win a trip for two to Venice—Italy that is! Spend five nights in the city that inspired it all! Winners travel business class and enjoy five nights in a leading hotel.
