Claire Wineland is a beam of light energy that has inspired many people to live and embrace life to the fullest.  Wineland, who was born in 1997 with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), has been given a diagnosis of death throughout her twenty years of life.  At age thirteen Wineland’s lungs failed and the doctors induced a medical coma; she was given a 1% chance of survival. However, sixteen days later she gained strength, vital signs improved, and she came out of the coma. Wineland’s zest and thirst to experience life and help others was a driving force, allowing her to surpass each diagnosis.

After the coma, at age thirteen, Wineland and her parents, Melissa Yeager and John Wineland, applied for the 501c3 and created the Claire’s Place Foundation.  Their mission was to, “Provide heartfelt help to children and young adults with Cystic Fibrosis, as well as their families, for the purpose of improving their quality of life.” Since Wineland and Yeager had an inside understanding of the medical system and the disconnections they were able to help other children and families through the process.

Claire’s foundation was a success from the day it launched. The foundation’s values include: prompt processing of grant applications for families affected by CF; careful attention to accuracy of resources; and bringing awareness of CF nationally and globally.  The foundation followed through with these values by: Creating grants from generous donors; connecting families to “Support Families” through email, Skype, or telephone; educating communities through public speaking, newsletters, press, and media related to CF; encouraged others to partner with the foundation to help fulfill the goals; and created a solid professional board of directors to manage and run the foundation so the mission could be developed, launched, and run.

Wineland, through the years, has spoken at many events and traveled throughout the world to advocate and educate for CF.  She will be keynote speaker at – AARC’s 3rd Annual Respiratory Patient Advocacy Congress this October.  She has also been a TEDx speaker; spoken at conferences worldwide; appeared in an episode of Red Band Society, and was in the CW documentary “My Last Days.” As a personal aspiration she joined the Phillips “Breathless Choir” as a soloist.  Wineland’s honors and media include: Seventeen Magazine as one of 17 Power Teens in 2016; Fox Teen Choice Award in 2015; the Gloria Barron Prize for young heroes; and the Los Angeles Business Journal’s small nonprofit of the year award in 2014.

While speaking with Wineland she shared her memory of moving out of her family’s home and her interaction with her mother. Claire disclosed that, “At age 18, when I first moved out, my mom was thinking I would just test the waters and be back. She was thinking I would move out to see how it felt, and that I would come home to die. I had to have a conversation with her to say, look mom; I don’t want to die at my mom’s house. That is what you want and makes you comfortable but that is not how I want it. I want to live my life, I want to have my own home, I want to work, and I want to die the way I want and where I want.”  Claire continued to discuss that a person has to be real and honest with self, and then have those hard conversations with the people around them.  “I cannot live my life doing what other people want or expect me to do.  I have to live and love in the way I believe is possible,” Claire stated.
