The Wushu Martial Arts Foundation Presents "The David 'Nino' Rodriguez Boxing Camp" - Helping Kids Have a Fighting Chance

The Wushu Martial Arts Foundation, a non-profit foundation to benefit disadvantaged youth, teamed up with Texas and New Mexico’s undefeated boxer and heavyweight champion David ‘Nino’ Rodriguez at The National Wushu Training Center this August.  They came together to help 65 of LA’s inner city kids learn the importance of having focus and drive incorporated into their everyday lives.  The Wushu Martial Arts Foundation is an organization created to help children fight their way to spiritual awareness through the teachings of Martial Arts.  Founded by Eric Chen, celebrity WUSHU master instructor (Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-Fat) and his wife, coach Debbie Chen.

I had the pleasure of taking a few moments to discuss The Wushu Martial Arts Foundation with Debbie Chen while watching the kids during a demonstration.  In speaking with her I learned that her husband, Eric Chen founder and Head Coach of the National Wushu Training Center, has been running the school for 26 years and that she has been with the school for the last 18.  Their goal is to help disadvantaged kids in building confidence, and to learn respect and discipline at a young age which is crucial to instill early on so the kids can continuously benefit from the teachings throughout their lives.

One of the Foundation’s goals would be to organize celebrity athletic camps for inner-city youth which was the perfect opportunity for David Rodriguez to get a chance to do something that he knew he would love to be a part of- work with kids for a day of boxing, demos, floor exercises and fun. This was the first in what will be a series of celebrity camps organized by the The Wushu Foundation, whose goal is to create Wushu Community Centers nationwide, providing inner city kids a safe harbor to gain the self-respect, discipline and etiquette that comes with learning the ancient Chinese art of Wushu.

David Rodriguez, an El Paso, Texas native, believes in good deeds, charity work and giving back to the community.  Another charity he is currently involved with is called Dame La Mano (Give Me Your Hand) Crisis Pregnancy Center whose mission is to help the community assist homeless women in crisis become a positive influence in society, by improving the quality of life through meeting their physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs and promoting self-sufficiency.  He is also in the process of starting a new charity to call attention to the string of murders that have been taking place in Juarez Mexico where The El Paso Times claims that there are "nearly 340" victims since 1993.

David wasn’t always on the right path.  In his youth he spoke of being troubled at times on the verge of taking the wrong path.  With direction from his trainers, Rocky Galarza and Louie Burke who instilled in him a whole new aspect of boxing he never knew existed, along with the support of his parents, he realized he wanted to fight professionally and not in the school yard. David always felt he could do whatever it is he wanted to do and now he is hoping to instill that in today’s youth.  His words of wisdom are “Do what you love.”

“Boxing always kept me focused, off the streets and out of trouble.  I wanted to share this gift with these kids.”  Through demonstration of his boxing technique, David wanted to take some time out to show the kids a positive way of expressing themselves through physical activity, hard work and focus.  The David “Nino” Rodriguez Boxing Camp hosted by David himself took place this August with instruction, workshops, demos and celebrity guests.  This will be the first in a series of celebrity camps organized by the The Wushu Foundation, whose goal is to create Wushu Community Centers nationwide, providing inner city kids a safe harbor to gain the self-respect, discipline and etiquette that comes with learning the ancient Chinese art of Wushu.
