Portfolio 2004: AIU Fashion Show & Animal Avengers Benefit Gala

(June 4, 2004 -- Beverly Hills)  I always like the win-win-win.  Tis one of life's supremely satisfying scenarios when, simultaneously, many parties benefit -- and this benefit party, put on by AIU and Animal Avengers, enabled just that.

Twas a wonderful win-win-win: AIU (American Intercontinental University) got to show off their Senior Design Collections with an impressive runway show, giving new designers exposure... Animal Avengers (the non-profit animal rescue organization) raised awareness, and money (from ticket sales, sales of Avenger Gear, and a silent auction)... and the audience enjoyed a delectable dinner, fab fashion, and great silent auction deals (like canine couture, a fancy doggie bed, even an autographed oversized photo of that comedic animal, Rodney Dangerfield -- who I keep hoping will one day auction off his secret to career longevity).

The fashion brought forth for the packed house was especially exciting because (and I had to keep reminding myself of this) these were graduating STUDENTS, not famous fashion figures (at least not yet).  An abundance of talent exuded from the Beverly Hilton ballroom stage, but Best In Show would eventually go to Sachiyo Kaneko ("Vernal Sunshine").  The crowd ate it up... after eating up a superb supper of salad, chicken, veggies, and an ice-cream-with-chocolate confection.   Naturally, animal models were also featured on the runway (doggie couture provided by "The Wagging Tail" store) -- much to the delight of the audience and the panel of judges, which included fashion stars like Louis Verdad and AIU alum Ashley Paige (www.ashleypaige.com).

Celebs in attendance included actress Shannon Elizabeth, founder of Animal Avengers, and Dr. Anthony Griffin, from the show "Extreme Makeover"... but believe me, the models strutting their stuff for AIU did NOT need any makeovers, they were drop dead hotties (and if you're wondering whether they too were students, the program credits LA Models).

Overall, a most excellent evening.  Kudos to the folks at Animal Avengers -- and to those experts in public relations, fashion shows and event planning, Fabulous...PR (www.fabulouspr.com).  Special thanks to Tracie May at Fabulous...PR for her assistance.  To learn more about the Avengers, visit www.animalavengers.com

Founded in 2001 by Shannon Elizabeth and Joseph D. Reitman, Animal Avengers is dedicated to rescuing and placing homeless pets, reducing pet overpopulation, promoting responsible pet guardianship and preventing animal cruelty.  By the way, if you are looking for a new pet, the Avengers have moved their regular adoptions from Mar Vista to the Westwood Petco, at 1873 Westwood Blvd; call Petco for dates and times.
