(Torrance, CA - April 25, 2004) Twas a very hot day in the great South Bay, and it wasn't even yet the merry month of May! But hundreds of lovers of gastronomical delights braved the heat to attend the annual "For Our Children" food and wine fest, and were glad they did. Revelers were treated to dozens of wonderful food selections to taste, sample and enjoy -- and over 60 wineries -- as well as a bountiful silent auction and lively live auction.
My favorite stops at the fest? Up near the top was the ceviche and gazpacho at H.T. Grill ("a village bistro" in Redondo Beach). Another standout: the always-great vanilla ice cream from Dr. Bob's -- made even more satisfying given the heat of this particular day!
Other booths served up pumpkin soup, tomato and basil soup, and pitas with your choice of fillings (babaganoush being my favorite). One purveyor offered a dark beer known as "Arrogant Bastard" (now how could I refuse a name like that, I ask you). Never got to try the nearby "Leninade", but it certainly seems like clever names and marketing is a hallmark here at the festival.
Guests were also treated to some sample products courtesy of Trilogy Spa (www.trilogyspa.com), a name which I assume refers to its trio of primary services (day spa, boutique, and nail studio).
As if all of the above wasn't enough, the capper was the Cooper. Yes, they were actually giving away a brand spanking new Mini Cooper car! A few hundred raffle tickets were sold at $100 each -- and I was told that if not enough tix sold, the winner would instead get half the pot of dough, a clever fundraising idea.
In summary, this summery event was well done, with proceeds benefiting Little Company of Mary Partners for Healthy Kids Mobile Pediatric Van, and the Sandpipers South Bay Charities. If you didn't make it this year, do venture down to Torrance for this fundraiser in 2005. And bring your best friend, your mate, or your Arrogant Bastard with you.
