Spain's Great Match: Wine Food and Design 2014 Review – Great discoveries

Spain's Great Match: Wine Food and Design 2014 was held at The Bazaar 465 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, LA Splash was lucky enough to attend the tasting and workshop from 12:00 – 1:15pm.

Pouring a Taste before Noon

The wine seminar by Steven Olson, wine & spirits educator was amazing in its ability to transport you to some of oldest wine growing regions in the world.

He told stories about discovering great wines 20 years ago that only the Spanish drank so he was so pleased that the rest of the wine lovers of the world are now about to experience the tradition. One interesting fact was that many wineries are run by women, which is different from the rest of Europe. Each person at the seminar tasted 4 whites and 4 reds, each quite different and at the end he told us the retail prices.

Spain’s Great Match, now in its 21st year, is a tasting event organized by the Trade Commission of Spain, in which American importers and distributors of Spanish wines present their top products, new wines and their latest vintages to the American wine industry professionals and consumers. The whole event was able to transport LA to Spain for the afternoon.

The tasting showcased importer/winery portfolio stations and regional tables for the trade and press in the afternoon. There was also a ticketed evening consumer portion featuring Spanish tapas. Attendees from 1:30 – 5:00pm enjoyed walking-around all the stations. The afternoon wine tasting was exclusively open for the trade & media.

Charity for the Event

We enjoyed tasting and learning about more than 200 Spanish wines and tapas created by The Bazaar® and of course, José Andrés the famous chef. All who attended this event experienced; the wine, olives and olive oil, cheese and meats, the special foods of Spain, which is rightfully proud of its cuisine and special heritage.  The lunch menu included; a chef’s selection of Spanish cheeses & embutidos, jamón, pa’amb tomaquet, beef flank steak, papas anarias, and lovely croquetas de pollo.

Cheese so much Great cheese

The culture, style & diversity of Spain was on display in every part of the tasting and learning in Los Angeles. Each attendee discovered the best of Spain right in Los Angeles at the dazzling Philippe Starck-designed restaurant, The Bazaar.

With so much to experience, we were able to taste over 200 world-class Spanish wines paired with tapas from the culinary imagination of Chef José Andrés, it was difficult to turn any of them down. We were immersed in the diversity of wineries each with a different story to tell.

This lifestyle showcase event was presented in a festive environment evoking the warmth, hospitality, passion and creativity of Spain. The proceeds of the event benefited a non-profit organization.
