The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa Review - A Beautiful, Comfortable, Classy Escape with Amazingly Friendly Staff!

Jamaica is a magical island known for white sand sun drenched beaches with turquoise water, amazing local food like jerk chicken, over 20 varieties of rum, and the original home of reggae music.

Christine and Shane Cohen the proprietors with three of their friendly staff

On a recent trip to Jamaica, to cover the Ocean Style Magazine’s annual charity event in Montego Bay, we decided to extend our trip by four days with a trip to Negril. We were lucky enough to have our lodging arranged at the amazing, elegant, classy, new, escape paradise The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa. This amazing property is nestled on nearly 2 acres located on the West End Cliffs of Negril overlooking the beautiful ocean with amazing sunsets.

A welcome drink for us from a very friendly staff

Part of the arrival welcome is a comp neck and shoulder massage

Once we arrived at the airport in Montego Bay, we were greeted by a friendly Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa driver who took our luggage and drove us just over an hour to the hotel. During the trip our driver explained the areas we were driving past and educated us about what expect at the hotel. The Spa Retreat is able to arrange any number of exciting educational getaway tours and can arrange any forms of transportation.

We were greeted with a beautiful double rainbow

A creation by the combined tireless efforts of owners Christine and Shane Cohen. Already successful Spa entrepreneurs in Ottawa, with over 160 employees at two elegant day spas, the couple combined their extensive talents to create this island paradise. Shane used his extensive architectural background to design this beautiful, organic, free-flowing, elegant hideaway while Christine handles the extensive day-to-day operations. This warm friendly couple came to Jamaica and fell in love with the beauty of the island and the people. They built from scratch this intimate boutique resort which opened in November of 2011, boasting 18 Ocean View Handcrafted Stone Cottages with interiors made of beautiful local Jamaica Cedar Wood. The stunning unique look of the Spa Retreat pool deck and cottages comes from the use of white limestone. Dug from deep in the Jamaica mountains to make sure of it’s pure white origins and brought to the resort by truck where the limestone was cut by hand, molded and precisely fitted to create the walls and walkways of this stunning resort. Shane made brilliant use of the natural limestone and Cedar and other woods of Jamaica to craft a stunning visual experience.

We each had a beautifully appointed Seaside Handcrafted Stone Cottage complete with a very comfortable Platinum Serta Queen Bed and 500 thread count sheeting. A night here and you just melt away all the big city stress and relax into tropical island relaxation. Featuring a private balcony, A/C, free Wi-Fi and a flat screen TV with American, Canadian and local channels. Garden and Rooftop Stone Cottages feature King Beds, along with all the other features of the Seaside Cottages.

Everywhere you look you see the beautifull Caribbean Sea

Relax and take a dip in a beautiful sea water pool. Soak up the sun laying on a floating mat or read a book under shaded cabanas. Don't be surprised if the resort's friendly dog Rosa, jumps in and joins you for a swim. The Poolside Bar is a great place for cocktails and lunch. We loved their blended fruit punch with fresh pineapple, papaya and banana. Add some coconut rum for the perfect cocktail.

Hanging out at the pool bar for yummy food and drinks

We are both snorkeling fans and the Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa has a many colorful fish just feet away. In the shallow water just off the resort pool you can see a huge variety of reef life and work up a great appetite for lunch. The front desk provides complimentary snorkel equipment.

Some samples of the delicious food we ate at The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa's Blue Mahoe Restaurant and Lounge Bar

The Blue Mahoe Restaurant and Lounge Bar at the resort offers seaside dining. Here you can dine on authentic Jamaican Cuisine along with great steaks and seafood. For breakfast try owner Christine’s favorite, Moringa Smoothie. Not only does it taste great but it will do wonders for your hair and body. We both enjoyed this smoothie with a Shrimp Omelet and a plate of fresh fruit. For lunch try the Jerk Fish Tacos. We both were amazed at how good their wonderful Homemade Chicken Soup was. You can choose from a variety of local dishes like Goat Curry, Jerk Chicken. along with sandwiches and salads. In the evening you can watch the beautiful sunsets as you dine on exquisite tasting local caught Snapper on Bed of Polenta, with a wonderful mango based sauce. Other favorites, shrimp or lobster pot, succulent shrimp or lobster slow cooked in curried rice with root vegetables; grilled filet mignon, crowned with creamy béarnaise sauce and garlic mashed potatoes.

The Blue Mahoe Restaurant and Lounge Bar always improving, while we were there they put in a beautiful new floor

They offer a huge selection to choose from for dinner and lunch. With the chef's attention to detail we loved every meal we had here at The Blue Mahoe. If you are wondering what Mahoe means, it is the national wood of Jamaica and the wood floor of the restaurant.

Such a beautiful setting for a massage at The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa

The Spa offers many different treatments from Seaside Relaxation Massage, to Sports Massage for those looking for deep tissue work.  Our massages were done under a covered canopy in the open air spa pavilion, with soothing softly music playing and the sound of the waves rolling into shore overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea. They were the perfect way to decompress from our busy life’s. You can also have spa services in your room if you prefer, or even Cliffside. The Spa also offer rejuvenating Body Wraps, several different Sugar Scrubs, Seaside Manicures, Classic Beach Pedicure, Organic Facial Treatments and owner Christine raves about the Reflexology Treatments. The Spa staff is well trained in all these treatments and very friendly. Remember the resort owners Christine and Shane own two spas in Canada, and have brought their vast experience, love and talents to Jamaica. The Spa sanitation standards are Canadian approved for your complete safety. There are daily Yoga classes as well.

A beautiful environment

The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa hosts many Weddings and has a special Bridal Suite. They also offer Yoga Retreats as well. There are many wonderful restaurants and bars within minutes and the front desk can get you a cab or arrange their own transportation to get you out to explore Negril. Before departing for the airport we suggest you buy Club Mobay Passes from the front desk. Beautiful sunsets at The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa

A week stay at the Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa is the perfect combination of blissful relaxation and adventures to suit your every desire. As the locals say, Ya Mon, everything is IRIE (chill) here in Negril.

Relax!

The entire staff at the Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel and Spa is incredibly friendly and professional as is their nature but taught, encouraged and exemplified by Christine Cohen. We were at many other locations in Jamaica but found no staff as open and genuinely friendly and caring as the staff at the Spa Retreat!
