Radisson Blu hotels have served my husband and me well in various places at home and abroad. The chance to book with a phone call in the U.S. has made it easy to set up arrangements abroad. A two-day stay in London is short so the location of The May Fair Hotel, (part of their newly launched Quorvus collection) was very important to us. As we were making our arrangements, however, we were amazed to discover the number of Radisson Blu hotels that are scattered all around London.
We were fortunate that even in the very busy summer season we were able to book a room at this special hotel. The May Fair is an historic hotel that has been modernized. Set in the heart of Mayfair, London, it is located on Stratton Street, within close proximity of Piccadilly, Bond Street, Knightsbridge, Green Park and Buckingham Palace. Our visit was significantly enhanced when we were easily able to get to all of these places and others.
Entering the hotel, we were enthusiastically greeted by Vatsal Thakkar, a very pleasant young man, who showed us some of the special features of the hotel. This 406-room hotel completed a $150 million renovation in November 2006, which updated this historic West End hotel. When it first opened in 1927, King George V and Queen Mary attended. The new features include Fendi furnishings; Baccarat chandeliers, a private theatre, ten signature suites, the May Fair Bar, the Asian-inspired May Fair Spa and the high-end Palms Casino.
The May Fair Hotel, which has been a by-word for elegance and style since the twenties, has special features, which make it an excellent venue for a number of events. For example, it is the Official Hotel of London Fashion Week, the Official Hotel of the 54th BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express and The Raindance Festival. The May Fair's partnerships are a testament to the hotel's style, glamour and service, and what it has become since its 2006 revival; a young, fashionable and connected central London hotel.
The May Fair Hotel's history has been based around the film industry for over half a century. In the 1950s it was owned by the American Danziger brothers, film impresarios who founded the New Elstree Studios and made a succession of smash hit films. Then as now the May Fair was the preferred haunt of celebrities, film and rock stars when they stayed in London.
Our visit was greatly enhanced by the comfort of our junior suite. This room was beautiful, user friendly and relaxing. We particularly enjoyed the way natural light entered the room from the ceiling. In addition, we enjoyed the fine detail of a May Fair Superior bedroom. Our room featured deeply textured fabrics, Catalan-designed furniture and a beautiful Sicilian marble bathroom complete with power shower. Our bed and bedding was luxuriant, resulting in a lovely night’s sleep. The bathroom was great to use with a tub in which to soak and a pleasant, powerful shower.
We enjoyed our breakfast at The May Fair Kitchen which has an open kitchen, where ingredients are gathered at their peak of freshness and transformed into meticulously simple dishes in front of you, sometimes by you. The hot breakfast and cold breakfast buffets are both so good and one could select an individual item, like poached eggs. I was pleased to be able to order gluten-free toast and coffee, which was delicious.
Though we didn’t have the chance to eat dinner here, our eyes feasted on the gorgeous looking fare. The chefs have sourced every ingredient from the farmer, fisherman or grower who originally produced it. Even the salt is part of their passion. It is amazing that the staff can tell you about this provenance from first-hand experience. You may want to test them.
We also enjoyed a quiet drink at the bar after the theater and before retiring.
We were impressed with the latest exercise equipment we observed in The May Fair Gym. To allow the most access to the exercise equipment, opening hours suit busy professionals, and offer both personal training and individual work out. A spa ajoining the gym offers a wide range of wonderful treatments.
With the luxury offered and solicitous attention by the staff along with a perfect location, who could want to stay any place other than the May Fair when visiting London?
