Porto, Portugal Review – Aerial and Street View Highlights

Tip:  TAP Portugal airlines is now offering free flights to Porto to any customer flying from US to Europe, who opts for their no-charge 3-day Lisbon layover.

A NASCAR type race in the city's downtown?

..The locals seemed to love it. Fellow tourists were perhaps also wondering what on earth they were thinking..

Arriving in Porto when its streets were impassable and barely visible because a NASCAR-type race was being held in the center of the city had an upside.

Our hunger to get to know the Porto streets we couldn’t pass grew.

It’s a great city to take in from up on high—

at the Clérigos Church tower,

on a fun funicular ride, perching on a bridge across the Douro River, or stopping on the Gaia side for a panoramic view.

Google Maps street views are inadequate to convey what you capture on foot:

an appreciation for the density of beautiful and historic churches in the city;

the stunning azulejo (blue tile) that you stumble upon;

ornate architectural details on historic buildings; the surprise of very modern architecture in this history-rich landscape—Serralves Museum and Casa da Musica;

You may at first be put off that a bookstore actually charges admission!

...but a visit to Lello & Irmão Bookstore is worth it...

..and they return the ticket price to you in the form of a discount if you buy a book

and most of all, friendly smiles from the real people of Porto, who seem to enjoy their city as much as you do.

Tip:  Skip the river cruise boat tour.  Views are not as good as those from up high,  and the narration on the recorded audio guide doesn’t sync with the ride nor present the information in an interesting way.

Luckily, our tour of Taylor Fladgate and most excellent account of the city’s port wine industry made up for the boat tour disappointment.
