Unique luxury holidays in Spain on the unspoilt Costa Brava are more affordable than you think at Castel d’Escales. An historic, private castle property that accommodates 14 guests, with on-site English host and gourmet cook, can cost much less than staying in an area hotel.
Your family and friends will feel completely at home while experiencing your own history in an 11th to 14th century castle that is comfortable and calm, surrounded by beautiful gardens with a private pool.
Located in Spain’s region of Catalonia between Barcelona and the French Border, Castel d’Escales is 30 minutes from the Mediterranean’s magnificent Costa Brava with its award-winning, golden sand beaches, small charming coves, gorgeous coastline and authentic fishing villages. Untrampled by mass tourism, there’s not a high rise building in sight.
The moment you arrive, greeted by the scent of lavender with sunlight reflecting off the inviting terrace, you feel tranquility and relaxation begin to settle in. Entering by the stone stairs curving around the outside of the 11th century circular tower, the energy of this ancient and historic home welcomes you. Casual and at ease, you’re free to be as active or idle as you wish during your stay…delighting in your discoveries of this beautiful area and its Catalan culture, history and cuisine.
The castle sleeps up to 14 guests and is perfect for groups with children. Great care is taken to ensure your stay is as restful and enjoyable as possible; the long-term resident host is available to answer questions and suggest the perfect off the beaten track beach or fantastic restaurant.
Delicious gourmet meals and wine tastings can be custom tailored for your group, served (and cleared away) in the barrel-vaulted dining room, as an add-on option. And up to two hours per day of housekeeping (except Sundays) is included in the booking price giving everyone more time to relax.
Activities range from world-class golf, hiking, water sports, boutique vineyard tours, cycling, retail therapy at stylish, chic shops and spa treatments with the area’s thermal mineral water to exploring medieval villages, museums and savoring Catalonia’s cuisine at some of the best restaurants in Spain.
The ancient city of Girona, resplendent with history and an abundance of attractions and cultural events for its modest size of 96,000, is only 10 minutes from Castel d’Escales. Easily one of Europe’s most enticing cities with its large, well conserved medieval Jewish Quarter, Gothic cathedral and Arab baths, it’s also home to the Michelin three-star ‘El Celler de Can Roca’ restaurant, widely known for Catalan Modernist Cuisine (and the number two spot on S. Pellegrino’s Best in the World 2011 list).
Why not have your own serene castle hideaway and ‘home’ just minutes away from the best of everything this fantastic coastal area of Spain has to offer? Pricing for a group of 14 during the summer season, May – September, costs as little as Eu75 per night per person. Add-ons (gourmet meals at the castle, activities, etc.) are extra. Bona Salut!

The enormous terrace, wonderful lavender-filled gardens and pool area provided a beautiful place to enjoy meals and sunsets with good friends and family. Jools’s hospitality was a special gift and her meals were delicious.
