Eating Prague Tours Review - Tasty Diversion from Usual Tourist Routes

Want a delicious approach to getting a taste of another country?  The Eating Prague Tours is a unique way to experience some of the quieter areas of Prague’s Old Town and New Town and sample some Czech food washed down with Czech beer. The Eating Prague Tours is one of several eating tours offered by the Eating Europe LLC Company.  

Since we were delighted with their Eating Italy Tour  (check our our story in Splash Magazines) we were eager to take the Prague version.  My husband and I took the tour the week before its official opening.  Even though one could call it a dress rehearsal, we were able to get a good feel of the actual tour and were pleased.

Eating Prague Tours, a four hour excursion on foottakes participants in and around Prague's Old Town. Visitors get to sample food and beer from a variety of vendors in interesting places not normally seen on a conventional tour.  Our guide showed us sites and landmarks that most tourists often don't see.

Our tour took place during a record breaking Prague heat wave. We therefore were pleased to start the tour in Gallery Le Courts quiet well-shaded courtyard.  Gallery Le Court is located in a quiet neighborhood less than ten minutes from Prague’s Old Town Square.  Le Court served us a variety of cold drinks and apple strudel. Then, we were ready to move on and explore other eating spots.

Mirka, our tour guide, took us to a unique shopping area called Gourmet Passage where we sampled some light open faced sandwiches from Sisters Bistro

Next were meatloaf and sausage sandwiches from the decidedly upscale  Nase Maso Butcher Shop where were able to observe right through the window how steaks and other cuts are trimmed from cow and pig quarters for sale to the public.

Then we stopped at the Farmers Market store of Sklizeno   The store sells a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and pastries.  We sampled pastries stuffed with fresh plums and sour cherries.

Since it was so hot, we were glad that our next stop was at the Novomestsky Pivovar or New Town Brewery. We sampled some of their New Town Lager and learned a little about Czech beer.  The average consumption of beer in the Czech Republic is 157 liters per person per year and beer is generally the least expensive beverage on a typical restaurant’s menu. Folks can even buy beer flavored ice-cream.

The tavern manager showed our group how beer was manufactured throughout the restaurant-brewery. It was great to cool off in the processing area.

We walked through a gorgeous garden that is owned and maintained by the Franciscan Monks living in the adjacent monastery on our way to our next stop.

Mirka then walked us to the Jindrisska or Bell Tower in Old Town where we visited Restaurant Zvonice on the eighth floor. As we enjoyed a picturesque view we were treated to Bohemian Sauerkraut soup.  After Mirka told us that it is rich in Vitamin C, I opted for another serving. Gotta stay healthy.

 We saw the well known sculptor of the rider on an upside down horse as we walked to our next stop on the tour.  I was intrigued by the “dead horse”. I later discovered that the artist David Cerny is known for painting a Soviet tank pink as a memorial to the Velvet Revolution and is also known for his large scale installation piece of babies crawling their way up the Prague television tower among other works of modern surrealism.

We traveled from the hilarity of the dead horse to our next restaurant, the elegant Cafe Imperial - quite a contrast. We were served braised beef in cream sauce with bread dumplings.  I have to admit that the looks of the dish didn’t arouse my taste buds, but turns out it was delicious.

 We headed to the Choco Cafe' to conclude with a delicious desert. This family-run shop is located on a quiet street about ten minutes from the Old Town Square. We ate fresh Horice rolls which we dipped into whipped cream and hot chocolate. Gave us just enough energy to walk back to our hotel.

Eating Prague Tours is fun, filling, and interesting.  Mirka provided a running commentary throughout the tour explaining how our various foods were prepared and even giving us recipes. She also pointed out sights that generally are not seen in the standard Prague tour.  Tourists with only one or two days in Prague should probably take in the standard sights such as the Bell Tower, Charles Bridge, and Old Jewish Cemetary. But, enjoy the Eating Prague Tours during your third day. Your stomach will thank you for it.
