Óbidos’ Evolutee Hotel in Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort Review – Recommended for Golf Addicts

This is an area where you can enjoy spectacular sunsets

As a non-golfer it never occurred to me that Portugal might be on avid golfers’ bucket lists.  According to the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) it should be. This year IAGTO awarded Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort the title of “2016 European Golf Resort of the Year”.

The golf course is eye candy, even for non-golfers

Look in one direction in this lagoon peppered landscape and you mainly see signs of a lot of construction.  Turn your gaze towards the Atlantic Ocean though, and you’ll see what clearly is a beautiful course, and one especially charming to non-golfers too during sunsets.

Signs were lacking along the way, making it difficult for our driver to find the hotel. Then, it emerges from the lagoon woods surrounds. Photo: Peter Kachergis

Evolutee Hotel on this site has the feeling of about-to-open, even though its soon marking its second anniversary.

A patio outside the lobby bar

The lobby designers, Yoo Studio, have spent a lot of time playing with perspective by doing things like putting 6 foot high backs to sofas, using enormous paintings for décor, and creating oversized doors and windows.

Much of the lobby decor seems to aim for royal associations

Some lobby tables are shaped like chessboard pawns, perhaps adding to an Alice in Wonderland feel.

View of the lobby as you enter the building

For many Americans who have been to suburban office parks the view outside the exercise room and many of the rooms facing an interior corridor feels more like an office park space than a hotel

If it were not for these studied lobby details, the building will likely strike many Americans as being more like a suburban office building, with long windowed corridors that look out to an interior garden space that perhaps suggest a putting ground to some.

All of the rooms in this hotel are alike- -and comfortable

The rooms have a studio apartment feel

For those of us that enjoy watching the growing number of TV programs about decorating small spaces or reading periodicals on the same subject, there is much to admire in how the rooms—all alike—successfully make a relatively small space feel larger.

Each room has an inviting bathroom with a large tub, shower and view outside to the room's deck

These rooms have a studio apartment feel, more than that of a hotel room.

The spa has an inside pool that complements the one outside.

If you like to go to Europe to stay in a hotel with the charm of historic spaces this is not your place.  Note:  The hotel may be modern in style, but Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort is located in a region blessed with UNESCO World Heritage sites and precious historic national monuments

If you feel comforted by staying in something a bit closer to a new American hotel this might be your pick.

The manager suggests you book ahead, especially during the February to May golf season.

The hotel has conference rooms that look out to the golf course and the ocean
