It’s easy to be awestruck by the picturesque settings extending as far as your eyes can see. Pictures do not do Cancun justice; it must be experienced. Once you visit this vacation mecca, you may leave with plenty of photographs, but the images in your memory, and the sensory overload from the experience are what make Cancun truly memorable.
Known for spring break and resorts that cater to your needs with all-inclusive settings, Cancun is without question one of the destination hot spots in the entire world. Don’t be fooled by the parties, the resorts and the food. While those are all tempting, Cancun has so many hidden treasures that the fun really begins once you leave your resort.
You could spend every waking moment of daylight on the sea getting lost in the reflection of the crystal blue water as if you were gazing into someone’s eyes and you would leave Cancun a happy traveler. The beauty of the water alone is mesmerizing, but what you can do and see in the water is where the adventure begins.
Trying to find something you can’t do in the waters of Cancun would be difficult, as they have an endless menu of activities. Snorkeling, scuba diving, visit the underwater museum, swimming with dolphins, zip lining over the ocean, fishing, jet skiing, the list seemingly never ends. If you want to experience it, you don’t have to venture very far in Cancun to try it.
The one thing you must make a priority on your visit to Cancun is swimming with the whale sharks. This might be a new creature to you, or you might have seen a glimpse of them on television, but the whale shark is almost like something out of Jurassic Park. The whale shark is monstrous in size (they have been seen up to 14 meters in length in Cancun) and their weight, well, let’s just say they would make it to the heavyweight class. Their size might be intimidating, but that is the only thing that might cause you to be cautious. They really just swim around the ocean at a leisurely pace without a care in the world, trying to eat enough plankton to fill up their bellies.
This is the ultimate sea adventure, because you are out in the wide open, and you are in the whale shark’s environment. Swimming alongside something that large is just awe-inspiring. As interesting as it is to swim alongside them, just as fun is never knowing where or when they will pop up. You can one minute literally be surrounded by whale sharks and then the next minute you are making a swim as you are chasing one down. To tell how tame and easy going the whale shark is, you can find a litter of tiny fish swimming in front of their mouth for long durations of time without a worry in the world.
To make your experience the best that it can be, you have to find the right boat and the right guide. Luckily I was able to do just that with Solo Buceo and their guide Diego. You might ask yourself how much of a difference can there be and I’ll tell you there can be a huge difference! When you find someone like Diego, they know all the tricks of the trade and he made sure we were right in the middle of the whale shark action. Diego doesn’t just throw you the sharks or the whale sharks, he gets in the water with you and if you are not that great of a swimmer he will take you by the hand to make sure you enjoy the experience. If you take the time to track down Diego at Solo Buceo, you won’t be disappointed. You still have plenty of time to enjoy this experience as the whale sharks take up residence in Cancun from June to September.
While you might never want to get out of the water in Cancun, one of the great ways to take in the view of Cancun and the beautiful blue water is by taking the ferry ride to Isla Mujeres. Isla Murjere and the ferry ride are a match made in heaven, a glorious way to spend your day. The ferry ride from Cancun to Isla Mujeres is about 25 minutes and leaving during the day is a perfect way to take in some sun, kick back and relax and enjoy the scenic view. The ride back to Cancun might be even better if you leave after sunset. You are not going to find a more beautiful backdrop as the view of the ocean and Cancun at night is just amazing and it is also a great way to wind down after a long day. That is just the boat ride; the experience of Isla Mujeres is the icing on the cake of this day. This small island takes you almost to another world. A less modern and more simple life than you would expect to find in this day and age. You can rent a golf cart or scooter to take in the scenery and you will find some great little city streets, an outdoor sculpture exhibit, amazing views high atop cliffs, a quaint little shopping area and some amazingly friendly people. If you go for the day, you can find tours on the island and water adventures along the lines of what you will find in Cancun, so making a day of it is definitely worthwhile. Before you make your way back to Cancun, make sure you try the Tikinxic. This grilled fish is fresh off that and it is great all by itself or you can make fish tacos with it. This fish is loaded with flavor and spice and it is an island favorite that you don’t want to miss. Just be careful how you pronounce it!
If Cancun already does not provide enough reasons for you to visit to visit them, how about planning a vacation to coincide with a world-class concert. Palace Resorts became home to Shakira for a concert on July 15th and with the great success of the event you can be sure that will be just the first of many concerts that will be coming to Cancun. If you went to the concert you would have had no idea that the stage was temporary and that the event took place on a golf course. Shakira put on an amazing show as the 17,000 fans who never sat down can attest to.
Palace Resorts not only put on the concert, but they did an amazing job of putting together travel packages for Shakira fans. Home to several resorts in Cancun, Palace Resorts offers you a number of great options for your vacation, even when Shakira shaking her hips to 17,000 people. The jewel of the Palace Resorts family would have to be Le Blanc Spa Resort, located right in the heart of Cancun. This stunning property will give you the glitz and glamour that you might find in Las Vegas while providing you with the beach experience right across the street. Le Blanc was recently recognized by AAA as an esteemed Five Diamond Resort for 2011. Le Blanc is considered to be one of the premier all-inclusive resorts not only in Cancun, but in the world.
