Approaching Jury'sCardiff Hotel

My first day in Cardiff, the driver of the sightseeing bus proudly showed us the four star Jury's Hotel, My last night in Cardiff, I had the delight of staying there. It is a wonderful place and a long stay would have been a great experience. However, with a 6:00 a.m. flight the next morning, our visit was short and we needed all the support a hotel can offer and that is what we got.

This sixteen years old hotel became Jury's nine years ago and has been continuously upgraded. The lobby is charming, a comfortable Victorian style space with many areas in which to sit, relax or work. It was helpful when we checked in that the receptionist asked if a wake up call was needed. It certainly was and a taxi, in addition. With these arrangements made, we could settle in and thoroughly enjoy the delights this hotel has to offer.

The Victorian-Style lobby

The room had many features that made our stay particularly comfortable, such as the coffee/tea service, the flat screened TV, a lounge - chair, large bed, organized space for clothes/suitcases, a safe, iron and ironing board, a mini-bar and so on.

There was a sense of ease and comfort in the room. I think this resulted from the careful attention to overall design including; fabric, carpet, window treatment, lighting, mirror placement and more. There was a luxurious feeling and also a sense of personal safety because of the lighting and placement of furniture. The bathroom was lovely to look at and a pleasure to use with good lighting, a safety bar and a tub designed for comfort and conservation.

An interesting, attractive book, 'Great Castles in Wales', was on the table along with several magazines. Looking through it, I noted how many castles I had seen and also how many I would like to see in the future.

Jury's has an authentic Irish Pub, Kavanaugh's with no less than six beers on tap. Small, enclosed areas promote visiting.

Dylan's Restaurant

The hotel restaurant, Dylans, is distinguished by a beautiful Tiffany- style ceiling fixture and renown for its wine list. Breakfast and dinner are served here. Dinner tables are set with a fresh flowers and acrylic sea salt and pepper shakers, simple and attractive. My husband and I enjoyed one of the loveliest dinners we have experienced anywhere. The service was impeccable. We always enjoy sharing an appetizer and dessert and were pleased this was not a problem here.

The menu was filled with varied and creative items, making choices challenging. All seven appetizers looked wonderful but our choice was 'oak smoked salmon on a warm potato cake with creme fraiche, cracked pepper and fine herbs'. The blend of flavors and textures was a taste treat and a lovely beginning to our meal. The French house red wine, Moreau Rouge, was perfect with our entire meal. From the twelve main course offerings that included fish, duck, chicken, lamb and grilled goat's cheese, my husband chose 'confit duck with garlic buttered greens and mashed potato, spiced mulled wine sauce' and I chose, 'grilled goats cheese on roasted tomatoes, asparagus and courgettes'. I was very pleased to hear my husband say, 'This is the best duck I have ever had' more than once and then, 'It is so crispy outside and so tender inside'. He couldn't praise it enough!

The best duck ever

It is often difficult for me to find a meal of vegetables and cheese and I was pleased to try a new preparation. The vegetables were cooked to perfection and the goats' cheese was plentiful, rich and very flavorful. There were also six side dishes such as 'honey roast vegetables', and ' plum, sunblushed and cherry tomato, basil and shallot salad'.

The dessert menu had a range of teas, coffees and six desserts. Our choice was, 'lemon tart with fresh strawberries', one of our favorites. It tasted as good as it looked, a blend of sweet and tart flavors that lingered long after we had departed for our room.

In our room we found the bath relaxing and the shower, stimulating. The bath gel, lotion and shampoo/conditioner were pleasant to use. Relaxed now, we found the bed extremely comfortable. So comfortable that it almost made up for the very short time we were able to use it. Once again, we were pleased with the attention to detail at Jury's. Our automated phone call came at the time requested, 3:45 a.m. but ten minutes later, a real person called to be sure we were actually up. This was very helpful and really impressed us. Sadly, it was time to leave but we look forward to a longer stay in the future.
