The history of the Ritz Paris resembles a fairy tale. But there are no fairy tales without magic. Two magicians contributed to making the Ritz Paris a legend. The first was CĂ©sar Ritz. In 1898, he created the hotel, endowing it with his style and his reputation. He gave it his name and all of his energy. He revolutionized the hotel business. The second was Mohamed Al Fayed and his family. In 1979, he acquired the Ritz Paris, and like a true philanthropist, set out to restore all of its prestige. Following an extensive renovation program, encompassing nine years to work, embellishment and passion, and the creation of new services, the legend was transformed into a reality.
The Ritz Paris is privately owned. Despite a few namesakes, it is unique. The name “Ritz”, synonymous with luxury, comfort and prestige the world over, has been frequently solicited. There is, of course, a Ritz in London, founded by César Ritz. But, from the beginning, the two establishments were distinct with separate management and independent directors. In this way, the name could not fall into the public domain. Nonetheless, the name “Ritz” hasn’t lost its cachet. Today, a half dozen establishments bearing the name Hotel Ritz are worthy of the great tradition founded by César; those in Barcelona, Boston, Lisbon, London, Madrid and Paris. But no one disputes the fact that the latter is The Ritz, and that the others are merely namesakes.
The luxurious atmosphere, the refinement and the serenity permeating the Ritz Paris are exceptional. Located in an 18th century mansion surrounded by relatively low, old buildings, it is one of the rare palaces to have wonderful views in all directions; from the view of the VendĂ´me column and the gardens to the East and West, to the Garnier Opera to the North, and the French garden of the Ministry of Justice to the South. Silence, light, trees, birds, and the rooftops of Paris.
In addition, the discretion, simplicity, and the courtesy with which clients are welcomed is unique. No one enters the Ritz Paris to “see and be seen”. Everything is organized so that even the most demanding client feels at home. More than a hotel, the Ritz Paris brings to mind a vast and comfortable private residence. Those who stay here regularly look forward to coming home to their routine and their old friends. At the Ritz Paris, the service is so discreetly perfect that it almost goes unnoticed. Each guest is treated with kindness but without familiarity. Before guests leave, the hotel has taken the time to note each individual’s likes and dislikes to be kept on file until their next visit. The Bar VendĂ´me is the favorite meeting place of Parisians, whether it is for lunch or high tea, for a cocktail or a light meal. Its warm ambiance, with woods and comfortable purple divans, gives it a relaxing atmosphere. From the first sunny days of spring, guests can lunch, or dine on the terrace, far from the noise of the city and the stress of Parisian life. White wrought-iron tables, dressed with blue and green geranium motif tablecloths, take on the colors of the season. The peaceful harmonious hues of trees and flowering scrubs contribute to a refreshing and relaxed atmosphere. Two fountains in romantic, baroque style, the imposing Greek-style statue, large Medicis vases, and marble columns give the VendĂ´me Garden unparalleled charm.
