Eva Airlines is probably the best-kept secret to those who are not frequent travelers to Southeast Asia.  I discovered Eva Air, a division of the Evergreen Shipping Group based in Taiwan, through my brother, who has lived and worked in Bangkok for the past 15 years.  He was so impressed with their hospitality and service that he only flies Eva Air to and from the West Coast and Bangkok. Traveling to Southeast Asia for photo shoots, my first trip to Taipei and Bangkok was on Eva Flight 17, a 777-300ER  Luxury Liner out of San Francisco after midnight.   It’s an unusual time for a departure but it actually works out great!  The entire flight over to Taipei is at night, moving away from the rising sun, which makes it much easier to relax and sleep.  I upgraded to the Elite Class, not that much more expensive, and well worth it for the 13-hour leg -- big comfortable reclining seats with leg rests, free slippers and headphones for the latest movies and great selection of music.   An hour into the flight, once we gained altitude, we were offered a beverage of choice by the friendliest and quite attractive flight attendants. That was followed by a delicious choice of diners, either western or Asian style. The first two choices were: pan-fried beef filet with western vegetables, roasted red-skin potato wedge, or braised lamb chops with seasoned vegetables, or the third choice of stir-fried prawn and scallops with spicy lemon grass sauce, mixed vegetables and steamed rice.  Throughout the flight the attendants were there to give the most exceptional service always with a smile. All meals are included with the flight. Before arriving in Taipei we were served again a delicious choice of either Asian or Western style breakfast. Eva Executive Lounge in Taipei Airport. Once I arrived at the Chiang Kai-shek Airport in Taipei, I went to the Eva Lounge to do a little work on the free Internet, have a bite of delicious Chinese food, before the next leg to Bangkok. Here again a most friendly and hospitable Eva staff was there to greet me.      I then boarded the last leg to Bangkok.  Once again after reaching cruising altitude I was served another delicious breakfast. The 3-½ flight arrived at the new state-of-the-art Suvarnabhumi Airport. I caught a taxi to my hotel, freshened up and was ready to explore exciting Bangkok, voted number-one City in the World by Travel & Leisure Magazine!!!
