(New York, Manhattan) May 18 & 19, 2008-"The Journey of thousand miles begins with one step (Cosmix School of Makeup)." That step for aspiring makeup artists and makeup professionals started at the Makeup Show on May 18 & 19. The makeup show was an extravaganza where thousands of beauty junkies came together to network and learn more about makeup application. It was held in the Metropolitan Pavilion and presented by the Powder Group. The Powder Group is the motivating force behind aspiring artists. The Powder Group is the creative think tank for artists because they offer hands on workshops, special events, and now the first publication devoted to the art that is makeup, On Makeup Magazine.

These schools included Makeup Designory, Vancouver Film School, and Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry. The makeup show's third annual celebration was in high definition frenzy! H.D. has taken over our lives and the makeup industry; lines like Makeup Forever, Face Atelier, Smashbox, Graftobian, and Temptu (to name a few) offered h.d. makeup. "H.D. makeup translates well in real life, film, and pictures," said Johnny Lavoy, Artist Director and owner of Moda Rey Salon. In response to new advances in high definition, cosmetics companies are now offering foundations that provide the coverage without looking thick or cakey for the scrutiny of film.

During the seminars words like layering and building kept resurfacing. These are the key of "longevity" makeup. Another main theme was airbrushing, a different method of applying foundation which is great for high definition. It was almost a battle of the conventional artists v.s. airbrushing professionals. JP McCary from Temtu couldn't put it any simpler. "Airbrushing is just another brush in your kit." McCary felt that with the different pressures and distance one was using the gun; it was like having up to four different brushes in one. All keynote speakers were in accordance with was tool choice. The wrong brushes can hold a good makeup artist back from being great. Lavoy offered his take on it. Whether you are conventional or contemporary, "It is about doing what works for you." Free Spirited Linda Mason ended her seminar by reminding everyone that rules were made to be broken.

Walking around the show was powerful. The amount of energy that emitted through the studios was overwhelming. On one end of the room, Eve Pearl, a celebrity makeup artist with more than 15 years of experience, was holding up her Emmy award. In the other corner, women were being painted from head to toe, a walking masterpiece of flesh. This show was about creating an illusion of flawless beauty.
