Technology progresses every day from a new computer chip to a greater energy storing battery. “Out with the old and in with the new.” However, this cliché has been revamped; it is now “Recycle the old to make the New”, well at least something new, however crazy it may be. To help you do this G4 has teamed up with Earth 911 in their aim of making recycling old electronic easy. This collaboration is called GCycle and the most common items spoken about are old batteries, phones and CDs.

Earth 911 an “online based national public service,  providing community specific recycling, reuse and disposal resources” to the internet savvy and of course interested. This organisation’s ultimate goal: “empower people to help protect and improve the environment.” Acknowledging their efforts and keen on helping, G4 has decided to integrate ideas and host an online forum at GCycle, an attached webpage at www.G4tv.com.

In addition to the online chat, you can enter your zip code and be shown the different recycling sites and different tips available for you to access and naturally, implement. For your enlightenment and for me serving dually as comical entertainment, click on their Flummoxing Facts, which give some insight to all the “new” creations that can be done with the recycled electronics found on the earth and other little fun facts that people hardly think of.

Some of these facts are:

Print Catridges

If seven years worth of discarded printer cartridges were stacked up, an ink and toner cartridge bridge or ladder can be built from the earth to the moon.

Obsolete and old cell phones

A new prospect of obsolete cell phones would be that if used as tiles, 1.6 billion obsolete cell phones could tile an area covering the state of Delaware and five years worth would cover New York, an idea that I am not too fond of.

Reaching for the stars even seems possible with GCycle’s satirical point of view on recycling old cell phone chargers. With more than 26 million miles of cell phone charger cords present in landfills when tied together and flung out into space, it could lasso Venus. If this was truly feasible that would be a fabulous Valentine’s Day gift for the astrological girlfriend.  

The two billion batteries tossed out each year when collected could construct a 63.380 mile long battery stick and used to reach around the world to tap yourself on your shoulder or to scratch your back, which ever suits your fancy.

Explore each Flummoxing Fact and try to learn more about saving the environment at www.Earth911.org.  Remember as we damage our environment we are also creating an equal and daunting impact onto ourselves or at least that is what should happen considering Newton’s third law that for every action there is a reaction. Take interest in what is happening around you and it’s the best way to get rid of all that “clutter” in your basement; all the stacks of your brother’s old CDs, your old game consoles and boxes of your “used to be” favourite shows or movies. If you can not reduce your use or reuse your electronic, recycle them.
