Birmingham’s Bogue’s Diner Review – A Birmingham Institution

Biscuits and gravy come with all omelets

It’s Sunday.

Filled to capacity by 8 AM on Sunday, Bogue's never felt too crowded

You’re in what used to be a fire station.

No frills decor

It smells of fresh brewed coffee –and later you’ll find out it’s a bottomless cup.

Different kinds of spaces to fit the mood and size of the group

Even though you may not have spent more than a weekend in Birmingham, you may meet someone you already know.  We did, when smiling Brittney Taylor and her father, owners of Rib-it-Up, invited us to sit with them at their weekly Sunday brunch get together at Bogue’s.  It’s their father-daughter tradition.

Our waitress Kerry Gibbs moved to Birmingham from California 25 years ago. Kerry proudly reports that Bogue's Diner has made its way onto lists of Top Ten Things to Do in Alabama and roundup reports on the Best Places for Breakfast in the Country

Looking around the room there seemed to be a healthy share of people sporting University of Alabama shirts and jackets.  Most people looked like coming to Bogue’s was as much a tradition as it for the Taylors.

It’s that kind of place.

It’s more than a stick-to-your-ribs breakfast.  It’s an institution and has been since 1938, albeit with a few changes of owner along the way.

In fact, years ago when the Walgreens chain wanted to demolish Bogue’s Diner the community roused in protest.  The upshot was a move to this former fire station location.

Don’t expect glitz or frills.  Do expect a good breakfast—pancakes and omelets are the top picks.
