The Stinking Rose San Francisco Review

A Rose Never Smelt So Sweet
Located in the heart of San Francisco, The Stinking Rose is a must for any connoisseur of garlic.

The restaurant is divided into two sections.  One has booths, larger open tables and tons of fun colorful decor for family dining.  The other section is more secluded and quiet with small tables and enclosed booths for more intimate dining.

The menu consists of your standard selection of fare, chicken, steak, seafood and pasta, but they are far above standard.  As the name indicates, the "secret" ingredient in their recipes is garlic.  Their signature dish, a must have, the Bagna Calda consists of garlic cloves oven-roasted in extra virgin olive oil and butter with a hint of anchovy. A wonderful treat for spreading on their house-baked focaccia bread.  If the sweet, succulence of the Bagna Calda doesn't appeal to your appetite, they have a fresh garlic relish on the table that will. This blend of garlic, parsley and vinegar has the bite more customarily associated with garlic.

Another great way to start your meal is one of their sizzling iron skillets.  They come in a variety of combinations of shrimp, crab and mussels.  The small shrimp skillet came with about a dozen tasty shrimp and several garlic cloves.  The shrimp and garlic butter will leave wet your appetite as you devour this tasty dish.

For the main course, we engorged on the ribeye, the chicken and one of the pizzettes.  The Forty Clove Chicken is roasted on the bone and comes with garlic mashed potatoes.  The tender chicken is covered with a delicious creamy white wine sauce.  The garlic and sauce add just the right amount of zest and aroma to make this one of The Stinking Rose's most popular dishes.

The perfectly cooked medium-rare ribeye steak seasoned with garlic and rosemary comes with pesto mashed potatoes.  This juicy steak's flavor was vibrant and contrasted well with the potatoes.

The Stinking Rose offers several types of pizzettes.  We tried the BBQ Garlic Chicken with cilantro and mozzarella.  It has a wonderful thin crust and tangy garlic barbeque sauce.

If you manage to save room, they offer a variety of delicious desserts.  We tried the Gilroy Famous Garlic Ice Cream with Caramel Mole Sauce.  Surprisingly, it was quite good and definitely a unique taste that any garlic lover should try.  If you've had enough garlic at this point, they do off several other tasty desserts.

Overall, The Stinking Rose is a fun, flavorful dining experience that everyone should try.
