Hussong's Cantina Review - So Authentic You Will Think You Are in Mexico

Las Vegas is without question home to some of the most creative and unique menus in the entire world. Sometimes when it comes to cooking you can push the envelope too far. Some chefs can take a dish you love and turn it into something you don’t even recognize. When it comes to Mexican food, authenticity can be the most difficult thing to do as you have high standards to maintain for your guests. If you want authentic Mexican food, Hussong’s Cantina in Shoppes at Mandalay Bay sticks to the tried and true philosophy.

Hussong's Cantina

There is a reason when you walk into Hussong's that the food and the atmosphere are as close to Ensenada as you can get without crossing the border, the original Hussong's Cantina opened way back in 1892. If opening its doors that long ago was not enough, Hussong's is also the place where the margarita was invented back in October, 1941 by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. Enough of the history lesson, but that should certainly give you a sense of what you are going to find at Hussong's Cantina.

Queso Bean Dip

Warm chips and even warmer salsa will get you started as you have to kick off your Hussong's experience with one of their margaritas. Hussong's wastes little time whisking your taste buds to Mexico with an appetizer list that includes; plazero grilled Corn, pozole soup, ceviche and guacamole. Corn on the cob and simple butter will not do after you try the plazero grilled corn, brushed with the heavy mayo-butter and then sprinkled with cotija cheese and chili flakes; you get a truly elevated taste with all of these powerful flavor combinations. The pozole is the classic recipe as is the ceviche, made with tilapia, but you can also find shrimp in the Baja version. The appetizer menu also contains a queso bean dip. While this is not something you would find in 1892, there are a number of versions all over Las Vegas and Hussong's certainly makes a hearty version that will stand up against the rest while also busting off more than a few chips as you try to enjoy this tasty creation.

Chile Relleno

Make sure to save room for the main course as Hussong's Cantina treats with generous Mexican hospitality, bringing out plates with portions that are so good you will want to finish it all, but so large completing that task isn't likely. When you see someone at the table next to you being served the sizzling plate of fajitas it is tough to turn down that tasty choice. Sautéed vegetables, your choice of carne asada, chicken, carnitas or shrimp and that is paired with rice and beans and all the fixings you would expect. Simply all-encompassing meal and if you aren't familiar with carne asada, give that a try as one of your meat options. This is a skirt steak that is marinated for hours upon hours to give you tenderness with each bite and the flavor is brought to life as the grill gives it that slight char while keeping the meat that nice slightly red beauty inside.

The two other dishes that will keep you coming back to Hussong's are the chile relleno and the Hussong's steak. Both dishes are focused around the rib eye steak that is cooked to perfection in the Hussong's kitchen. The chile relleno takes the rib eye, chops it up and stuffs it inside a grilled poblano pepper and then it is topped with cheese, sour cream and avocado. This comes off as an extremely rich dish, but the pepper steals the show, as grilling it enhances the flavor but is still mild enough to allow any palate to enjoy it. The Hussong's steak is simply a great cut of rib eye that is given just that little something extra with three chile rub and chimichurri butter. Hussong's isn't a steakhouse, but if you are one of those people that must have a steak while you are in Las Vegas, this one will not disappoint  While all the meat options are amazing, Hussong's also has great vegan menu that includes vegan cheese sauce and Gardein Chick'n Strips.

Let's not forget the margarita; Hussong's did invent it so they do know what they are doing. The classic is perfect and with the Hussong's motto being "less ice, more tequila," you know you are going to get your money’s worth. Don't limit yourself to the original; Hussong's has evolved into the world of mixology with a lineup of unique margaritas. When the Las Vegas heat hits triple digits I don't think you will find anything quite as refreshing as the blackberry splash, Don Julio Blanco, muddled blueberries and ginger liquer. For those looking for a little spice try the El Pepino that features Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila and muddled jalapenos. Hussong's truly has a margarita for every taste.

Hussong's Original Margarita

Hussong’s is more than a place to eat. It is a little bit of history, a lot of fun and even better food. If you are a connoisseur of Mexican food you are simply going to love Hussong’s from the minute you sit down and much like Mexico, you can enjoy Hussong’s in Las Vegas from breakfast to last call.
