It’s hard to believe a decade has flown by since an acclaimed French chef re-imagined an American culinary classic for the Sin City market. Award-winning Chef Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar, located in the sky bridge connecting Mandalay Bay and Luxor Casinos, brought new life to a nation’s favorite meal, one that’s inherently associated with Las Vegas: the burger. Perhaps it was his outsider status as a Frenchman that allowed Chef Keller to redefine that quintessential sandwich. Starting with locally grown organic meat and on-site butcher shop, all his burgers are hand mixed, hand shaped and custom cooked to order with an array of “build your own” toppings, sauces, cheeses and breads for a culinary experience sure to satisfy even the most discriminating palate.
Unlike previous burger concept restaurants, The Burger Bar was the first to marry classic American options with high end culinary flavor profiles on the same menu. Depending upon their mood, guests can scarf a juicy cheeseburger with tomato and bacon with a side of fries or they can slowly savor what may be the most decadent burger they have ever tasted, The Rossini, which is a masterpiece of Kobe Style Wagyu Beef, sautéed fois gras and shaved truffles, perfectly paired with an excellent wine. (The Rossini was also named one of the Top Ten Burgers in Las Vegas by Vegas magazine.)
It wouldn’t be true to Chef Keller’s ambitious approach if he stopped thinking creatively with just the burgers though. Another factor that has helped establish Burger Bar Las Vegas is its “Ultimate Build Your Own Milkshake Experience,” that continues the customization theme into a sweet and decadent direction. Of course the classic vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors are offered, but who could stop there with so many favorite candy and fruit topping choices and over a dozen liquors to blend into the mix?
It didn’t take Las Vegas long to appreciate the unique approach of what Chef Keller created. The restaurant was an immediate success and in subsequent years has spawned additional Burger Bars in San Francisco, St. Louis and Beijing, China. For carnivores who just can’t get enough of his delicious creations, (or visitors who aren’t in Vegas enough to satisfy their burger cravings), Chef Keller has written Burger Bar: Build Your Own Ultimate Burgers with step-by-step instructions on how to re-create his flavorful patties of perfection in their own kitchens.
