Redesigned after Hurricane Ike beat up Galveston, this steak and seafood house doesn’t have any of the traditional heavy woods and dark colors you usually find at these establishments. Instead, it is all soft colors and exotic lighting in the bright and airy open dining room. We found it very relaxing with good views of the other diners and the terrace outside. This chilly night was not the time for opening those huge windows facing out on the deck, but in warmer weather, the lovely gulf breezes flood the interior.
The menu here is huge, with a variety of entrees, tempting appetizers and raw bar. At the top of the menu is a list entitled, “ Today’s Fresh Fish Selection” with check boxes next to the 15 fresh fish they serve daily, when available.
We jumped right into things by ordering some wine and one of their raw treats – the Crab, Avocado and Mango Tower, drizzled with basil olive oil. We rate the presentation and satisfaction as “soaring” for this unusual food high-rise.
Fish should taste like it just came out of the water and be cooked with an understanding of how heat and timing can alter its flavor and delicacy. When going to a restaurant for the first time, you never know how things will turn out, but as fish lovers, Willie G’s reputation had excited us to the possibilities.
Dennis ordered the Flounder Stuffed with Crabmeat served with Roasted Red Potatoes and String Beans. A mostly mundane dish at many restaurants, this specialty of Willie G’s demonstrates their knowledge and appreciation for the subtleties of flounder preparation. It was perfect, and the lumps of crabmeat were practically a meal on their own.
Marilyn’s entrée, the Hazelnut Trout, was lightly breaded with a Hazelnut Crust and then topped with Grilled Tomato Salsa and Shrimp, drizzled with lemon butter. This was accompanied by Parmesan Risotto and Asparagus. Another great choice, with her membership in the “clean plate club” once again secured.
“No great meal is complete without dessert,” say the experts. Which ones? Probably those in need of a diet, but hey, who are we to argue? Our charming waitress brought out the dessert menu and helped us make a choice. We decided to indulge in the Chocolate Eruption, an incredibly rich and warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Pure ecstasy! And those experts are right… all that elegant sweetness made everything else seem that much better.
So, did we like Willie G’s? You betcha! You never know what you may find when wandering along the Gulf Coast on a cold, blustery night. We found treasure in the friendly warmth of this first class fish house.
