Tea at the Drake Hotel Chicago Review – A Wonderful Treat for the Holidays and all through the Year

I have always wanted to have tea at the Drake Hotel in Chicago.  Having heard about it for years, I intended to go but somehow did not.  The perfect opportunity arose when I accompanied my husband to a three-day meeting held at the Drake.  Even though we live in Chicago suburb, the chance to stay downtown during the three days of the meeting was a luxurious and memorable experience.

Enjoying tea

I found it interesting that the beautiful Palm Court where the tea is held was empty one minute and filled the next.  People come from near and far.  For some it is a holiday tradition and for others an experience not to miss when visiting.

Gluten free tea

Because I have dietary restrictions, I wasn’t sure how may of the offerings I would be able to eat.  But, I was delighted to learn that the sandwiches and sweets met my gluten-free needs. Clotted cream and other condiments were part of the lovely table set up.  Of course, the tea was spectacular, with the customary sugar and milk available and servers refilling the hot water continually.

Condiments and harpist

The atmosphere was so relaxing and elegant.  A harpist is playing and Palm Trees surround a fountain.  All around me people were visiting and seemingly feeling very special.  At a table next to me, I met the two women who were visiting from Denver, Michelle and Margaret.  Margaret enjoys teas whenever she travels.  At another nearby table, a group of co-workers from Chicago were celebrating a birthday.

Staying at the Drake also provided my husband and me an opportunity to explore all of the other restaurants, all of which having great reputations and interesting histories.  We have lived in the Chicago area for many years and always thought we would have dinner at the well known, Cape Cod Room.  And so, we did and were impressed with the food, service and ambiance.

Looking for brunch one morning, we decided to try the Drake Bros.  This restaurant has a wonderful view of Lake Michigan.  It is only open for breakfast and brunch, but the food is beautifully prepared and delicious.

During the meeting, participants were on their own for lunch, giving my husband and me the chance to try the restaurant bar, Coq d'Or. Once again, the food was well prepared and my husband’s hamburger was outstanding.  Their select of whiskey’s was impressive, to say the least.

Since I was not attending the meeting, I had the opportunity of exploring Michigan Avenue.  Shopping opportunities were everywhere, one mall after the next.  There were also beautiful views, theaters, restaurants and interesting people watching.  Tourists filled the streets.  One day, I was feeling energetic and walked as far as the Art Institute where I attended a chamber music concert.

Cubs - still

I agreed with the attendees at the meeting.  Chicago is a great place for a meeting and the Drake was the perfect venue.
