Siri Restaurant Review - Not Your Typical Indian Lunch Buffet

A friend invited me to join her for lunch at Siri Restaurant in Wheeling.  I was curious about the lunch menu – the dinner menu was well reported.  I frequently eat at Indian restaurants either with good friends or with our adult grandchildren in California who love Indian food and frequent a number of Indian restaurants in Silicon Valley and Livermore.  So, I was curious to see what this restaurant off on its own in Wheeling offered.  There was what looked like but really wasn’t a typical lunch buffet.

Approaching Siri

There are a number of factors that set this restaurant apart from other restaurants serving the foods of India. Owners, Ramesh Gorintla and his partners have recreated the magic of home cooked delicacies from across all parts of India.  Siri presents a delicious menu of North and Southern Indian cuisine, and a rare feast of dishes prepared from recipes that have been culled from kitchens - both humble and royal, across the region. There is a rich and diverse spread of items that are rare in restaurants across the country.

Stepping inside

Ramesh decided to feature a 24-item lunch buffet Monday through Friday and this has become very popular. Knowing that many of his weekday customers come from the surrounding businesses, he believed that a lunch buffet would be best, so those who work and have limited time for lunch could get in and out quickly. And he was definitely right. Priced at only $12 per person, Siri consistently serves 60 or more lunch buffets each day during the week, and the number continues to grow as was evident the afternoon I visited.

Head Chef and server, Kiran

Customer favorites include Siri’s authentic Biryani, which is offered with chicken or as a vegetarian dish, Goat Curry and Siri’s freshly made Butter Naan. Ramesh commented that, “Customers also appreciate the price and there aren’t many restaurants that offer the type of extensive buffet that we do for only $12.”

Vegetarian items from the buffet

Something that is rather unique here is that,“We have over 180 items on our menu, and each of our four chefs contributed to its creation,” explains Ramesh. “We knew from the start that we didn’t want to hire just one chef,” he continues. “It was important that our menu featured the freshest of ingredients and encompassed all Indian cuisine, so we purposely searched for chefs who could work together to create dishes that were unique to their hometowns,” he adds. “So far, it’s worked out beautifully!”

Meat plate from the buffet

Entering the restaurant, I noticed a happy hum among the lunchtime customers.  Some were gathering the food from the buffet and others were chatting at their tables.  I was offered a drink and decided to try a mango flavor drink that is made with yoghurt and is delicious.

Desserts

My friend selected many of the delicacies from the buffet table and a plate of appetizers.  In my case, I was more careful with choices that were vegetarian and gluten-free, and these items were delicately flavored, some spicier than others and I appreciated the wholesome freshness of the food.  I was especially impressed with the fluffiness and carefully balanced flavors of the vegetarian biryani.

And then there were wonderful desserts from which to choose.  I could not decide which I liked the best.

Even if Siri is not “on your beaten path”, it is worth a trip for a wonderful lunch or dinner.  At dinner you can choose the degree of spiciness. See the Chicago Splash review of dinner.
