Koi Fine Asian Cuisine & Lounge Review – Dim Sums Celebrate 10 Years

 

I have had many occasions to enjoy Koi Fine Asian Cuisine & Lounge during the ten years it has been in Evanston. I have enjoyed delicious food at as guests at parties and end of the year luncheons and our own dinners at Koi Fine Asian Cuisine & Lounge. Now, in July, Koi is celebrating its tenth birthday by introducing a Dim Sum experience.  Koi is now open longer hours, beginning at 10:30 on Saturday and Sunday for a special Dim Sum treat.  Many will be thrilled to learn they can enjoy Dim Sum at Koi in Evanston and no longer need to travel to China Town.

 

When I told a good friend of mine how nice it was to finally experience a Dim Sum dumpling that Koi has recently been introduced to celebrate it’s tenth birthday, she said she had just eaten there for the first time and it was wonderful.  I agree with her.  The restaurant is lovely, the food, delicious, the service is friendly and helpful and it is all around “user-friendly”.  During the ten years that it has graced Evanston, in addition to a lovely menu that included Chinese and Japanese favorites, a special “Healthy Eating at KOI!” became available.  This is definitely a menu for me, someone who is gluten-free and vegetarian.  They also offer eight distinct regional cuisines of China, party trays, 3-course prix-fixe meals for lunch and pre-theater, private dining arrangements and carryout.  What is left?  Dim Sum, of course for happy 10th birthday. Because I am vegetarian and gluten-free, this was my first opportunity to enjoy the wonderful texture and flavors of the Crystal Vegetable Dumpling, one of the Dim Sum offerings.  The soft gentle rice dough filled with vegetables that were finely chopped and perfectly seasoned was a special treat.  They were so good I am likely to return for more, soon.

 

 

I also enjoyed lovely vegetables.

 

 

My husband is neither gluten-free nor vegetarian and enjoyed each of the lovely Dim Sum dishes prepared by Chef Mark Tsang.

 

 

He commented, as he tasted each item that the flavors and textures were perfect.

 

 

We enjoyed talking with owner/manager Sandy Chen. How she came to be celebrating Koi’s 10th year is an inspiring story.  Arriving from China as a teenager, Sandy grew up in Highland Park and attended the University of Illinois, Chicago.  She earned money for school working in restaurants and when she graduated she took over a restaurant that her friend’s parents had operated in Lakeview for 40 years.  Sandy operated Chen’s, at 3506 N. Clark in Chicago for 10 years Chen’s Website.  In 2004, with 10 good years behind her, Sandy opened Koi, named after the koi fish, a symbol of the luck in Evanston.  I remember the oohs and aahs at the time.  It was dramatic and beautiful and continues to be.

Koi is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and dim sum brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Dinner is served from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday, 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, and 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
