The Movie That’s Giving Back: 'Gimme Shelter'

I love nothing more than a movie embedded with a passionate story; a story that not only moves its audience, but rouses emotion. On January 24, 'Gimme Shelter' will be released in theaters around the country packaged with an inspiring plot and a director and cast promoting an even more inspiring cause.

Based on a heartbreaking true story, 'Gimme Shelter' depicts the life of 16-year-old “Apple” Bailey, a very dramatic and challenging role for actress Vanessa Hudgens, who must cope with the harsh veracities of living on the streets.Things take a turn for Apple when the teenager turns to a suburban shelter for homeless teens.  With the guidance and comfort she receives from the relationships she establishes at the shelter, the young teen is able to face the jarring realities of her life with maturity and courage. With a hugely talented cast, including Rosario Dawson, Ann Dowd, James Earl Jones, and Brendan Fraser, 'Gimme Shelter' not only represents the lives of many American teenagers but the film also showcases how shelters have the ability to change the lives of so many in need.

Roadside Attractions and Day 28 Films hosted a special charity screening of 'Gimme Shelter' at the Grauman's Egyptian Theatre that helped raise awareness for the shelter, Several Sources Shelters, Inc. Proudly noted by the Several Shelters founder, Kathy DiFiore, “[the organization] operates five shelters in New Jersey for babies and their mothers and for homeless women.” Several Sources Shelters also provides young mothers with a 24-hour hotline program (1-800-662-2678) to bring forth guidance and comfort to fearful and despairing mothers. Saving lives, providing inspiration and making a difference are the three principles Several Sources Shelters, Inc. embodies and they continue to change lives everyday.

The event was filled with wonderful food, delectable drinks and star appearances, and to top it off, Director Ron Krauss matched all donations made on the night.

The movie continues to recieve an immense amount of support, including the Vatican itself. Yes, that's right, I said the Vatican. In December, His Excellency Bishop Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, president of the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life, endorsed the film inspired by real pregnancy shelters [Published by Christian News Wire - Dec 23 2013] saying, "The remarkable narrative of GIMME SHELTER expresses a powerful reality and the heroic love of a mother for her unborn child. Exploring the hard questions regarding the meaning of life, family, love and suffering, our heroine, "Apple," fights against all odds and finds hope in the kindness of some key people..." This is a must-see movie that shines a light on the importance of shelters and will undoubtedly instill a sense of hope in viewers from all backgrounds, so make your way to a theater near you to see 'Gimme Shelter' on January 24th!
