At the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival, the world red carpet premiere of the American film, The Immigrant received distinguished honors after receiving a nomination of the Palme d’ Or, which is thee top honor a film maker can receive at the Cannes Film Festival. The film boasts a top-billed cast including Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner, and Joaquin Phoenix among other elite names.
At the premiere, the cast of the Immigrant posed on the red carpet for photo ops then made their way into the screening. Cotillard opted for a white, tailored Christian Dior number for the premiere. At the conclusion of the screening the cast embraced, posted for a few photo ops, and collectively left the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
As James Gray’s fifth directed film, the storyline revolves around two Polish sisters Ewa (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda (Angela Sarafyan). The setting of the film takes place in New York City during the prohibition era. Unexpectedly, Ewa’s sister, Magda becomes afflicted with tuberculosis and is separated from her sister Ewa as she is quarantined. During the film Ewa is placed in the situation of being deported back to Poland, until Bruno (Joanquin Phoenix) comes to her rescue. During the film Ewa’s morals are continuously being questioned which entices the filmgoer to want to know more about this multi-dimensional character. In the climax of the film, Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) and Orlando (Jeremy Renner) are in awe of Ewa and rage in havoc, which leads to a blood battle and Orlando’s life taken by the acts of Bruno. Ewa is contented when she takes a boat to Ellis Island with Bruno to liberate her sister from an immigration infirmary when money is given in collateral.
Marion Cotillard’s lead role carries the film, however the elements that conclude the film are lacking, which leave the viewer with many unanswered questions and wanting to know more. Gray does a suburb job inventing the ambience but fails to create dialogue the viewer is not likely to anticipate. The immigrant so far has received lukewarm reviews, while the film Blue is the Warmest Color took home highest honors at Cannes with the Palm d’ Or award. Currently, The Immigrant (2013) is in distribution with the Los Angeles based Weinstein Company among six other distribution companies internationally.
