'SXSW Film Festival 2016' - Audience Award Winners

On Saturday, March 19th the 2016 SXSW Film Festival announced the winners and honored films from the following categories:  Narrative Feature Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Headliners, Narrative Spotlight, Documentary Spotlight, Visions, Midnighters, Episodic, 24 Beats Per Second, SXGlobal, Festival Favorites, and Design Award.

The SXSW Film Awards are presented by Panasonic and certified by the accounting firm of Maxwell Locke & Ritter.

During the Audience Awards the moviegoers submit their rating of the film using a ballot provided at the theater (Audience Award Ballot), and the audience makes their voice heard with the Audience Award.

The film Transpecos was directed and produced by Greg Kwedar and won the audience award  in the Narrative  Feature Competition.  Transpecos is a thriller about three U.S.-Mexico border patrol agents who find themselves caught up in the drug trade. The cast of the movie are Gabriel Luna, Johnny Simmons, and Clifton Collins Jr.  In addition to directing and producing the movie, Kwedar co-wrote the story with Clint Bentley.

The Documentary “Tower” won the audience award  in the Documentary Feature Competition.  "Tower" is an animated and cinematic film that chronicles the 1966 mass shooting at the University of Texas.  The "Tower" also won the Jury Awards  in the Documentary Feature Competition as well as winning the Louis Black “Lone Star” award. The documentary is directed by an Austin based director Keith Maitland who also premiered another film at the Festival titled, “A Song For You: The Austin City Limits Story.”

Other SXSW audience awards went to Jean-Marc Vallee‘s “Demolition,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who is a successful investment banker until his life goes out of control after the death of his wife in a tragic car crash.

SXSW 2016 Film brought a wide variety of films over nine days to experience a diverse line up and provided access to more than 550+ Conference sessions with visionaries from all corners of the entertainment and media industries.
