Jay Gammill makes comedic directorial debut with fresh young cast and 83-year-old scene-stealing Hollywood living legend
Tuesday May 21, 2013 marked the On Demand digital release of director Jay Gammill, screewriter Jim Beggarly and producers Eban Kostbar and Joseph Mckelheer's five-year-long labor of love - the fun indie comedy Free Samples - a day in the life of a hot mess Stanford Law School dropout/L.A. food cart fill-in (the hysterical Jess Weixler). The red carpet was followed by an exclusive viewing and Q&A session with the cast, director and producer at Laemmle Theaters NoHo 7 in North Hollywood. The official Free Samples after party took place at The Federal Bar North Hollywood. V.I.P. guests enjoyed classic Funk and Soul tunes from the house DJ, complimentary cocktails, and a rooftop lounge with an enviable view overlooking NoHo.
Free Samples has some great performances througout the 79-minute feature. Comedians Matt Walsh (Ted) as the disgruntled neighborhood stamp seeker, and Wendy Shapero (The Secret of Light) as the patchouli and bead wearing, drum-playing day tripper are stand-outs. Jason Ritter (The Event) is hilarious as the clueless, un-housebroken, wanna-be rock star, and 83-year-old Hollywood living legend Tippi Hedren (The Birds) steals scene after scene as the sweet yet senile, former Warner Brothers studios bombshell beauty/man-eater.
